Mine is definately ONE.

Let's say that George bush said he was going to throw away the bill of rights but he was willing to let us keep one amendment.

Which one would you keep?

Unfortunately, the Constitution is a dead letter and is void where prohibited by law. History has shown that constitutions are at best only a means of slowing the growth of government, but are no safeguard against the designs for power of some men over others.

Amendment X

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

If the first nine were removed hopefully each and every state would have the intelligence to implement the ones removed into the state constitution and therefore most of our rights would be maintained (only at the state and local level, though)

I think I have to disagree with you here. While I might also choose the 2nd, the 1st might be the must important. The others might take time to win back but through the discusion and debate aforded by the first you could still win back the others. I think that the builders also felt that freedom of speach was the most important, and I think they felt that 2 was 2nd most. Change is always possible if free speach is afforded.

Well for one the patriot act is pretty good proof that the pen can be mightier, and that can work both ways.
two, in a democracy you could win them back, but right you are that in a monarchy it probably would get your head removed.

Serious question here:

If you oppose the Patriot Act (or some other unconstitutional act), do you think you would be more effective by rallying people together in support of your cause with free speech, or do you think you'd be better off storming into Washington with a few guns blasting? Personally, I think the swordfight can be avoided altogether in this situation.

If you're talking defense from other countries, we have a military that is more than adequate for that job.

PS - I'm NOT against the 2nd amendment, I simply gave my opinion that it wasn't the MOST important amendment.

I do oppose the Patriot Act (despite it's catchy name) and I have believe most if not all of it will be deemed unconstitutional.

The time is not upon us for the need to storm Washington. I suspect it never will be. The option remains open though as long as we have the 2nd ammendment. I think throwing bullets MUST remain an option as throwing newspapers seems to be highly ineffective.

We're not talking about an act of questionable constitutionality. We're talking about the entire Bill of Rights being squashed.

That being said, imagine what would have to happen, the tyranny of a scale unimaginable to Americans, that would have to be present for the entire Bill of Rights to be made void. Once we got that far, brute force would be the ONLY thing that would bring it back.

Comparing India's independence with our own is like comparing apples and oranges. We were up against a tyrannical monarchy, at a time when democracy was almost unheard of and England by no means would simply free the American colonies. India protested a democracy's intervention, at a time when the world was concerned about a nuclear war. In fact, India probably would still be ruled by a monarchial Great Britain if we had refused to fight for independence.

At the time of America's war for independence, it was not the dictatorship that you and many others seem to think it was. True, the monarchy was stronger then than it is now, but Parliament had most of the power. Also, the Constitution was based largely on England's model for government, with a few changes of course.

England's Parliament was a gathering of nobles and other such tyrants, obsessed with power.

Here's an example:
We complained about the English taxing us without proper representation in Parliament. So the English, rather than let the colonies send over representatives, passed legislation so that we could be taxed without representation.

Oh, I'll keep my guns too. I always figured though that there will always be guns available on the blackmarked. Hell, If it ever came to that point I bet there would be a few contries that would give us guns. Not to mention that (IMHO) most millitary would side with the people. It would end up being the US millitary/citizens vs The US "government"/ United Nations forces.
