Thanks for all the interesting responses guys.  As I said above, this was only a hypothetical scenario.  Clearly, as you all have spelled out, there are many functional limitations to unlocking the food.  I was just wondering what the situation would be if people no longer had to work for the privilege to remain alive.  In an ideal world, access to food would be a basic human right.  Of course, basic human rights are not very well enforced in this world, obviously.  I'm under no illusion that the term 'basic human right' means much of anything in most places on this planet.  Anyway, good responses.

they didn't have to work much--food was free

so did that lead to happiness?

or are there other inherent problems in human psychology?

I believe Polynesia was studied, so we should have some facts  available, rather than just theory.

Yeah I gotcha now, well, I don't think looking at pre-contact Polynesia is a good idea because I am talking about what would happen in the modern world.  If food, today, suddenly became a basic human right, what would that do to the structure of civilization?  How would the modern world be affected?  The economy?  So I think looking at Polynesia would be irrelevant; it wouldn't tell us what we wanted to know, really.

Jean Paul Sartre wrote a play called "hell is other People"
Freud although wrong in many ways did bring to our attention the inherent conflicts within ourselves
Then there are people who can't leave abusive relationships
and communism failed
and many people apparently die shortly after retiring, or feel very lost

so I'm thinking of these sorts of things

so although of course we all wish everyone had enough good food to eat.
I doubt free food alone would solve much

here's another way to look at it
who has free food?
Kids, that's who!
(middle class kids & above lets say)
and do they bite each other as toddlers? yes!
and if the parents are dysfunctional, will they be? yes!
etc.
It takes years of great parenting in an emotionally healthy society to raise happy individuals, rather an anomaly I would guess.
So being well fed is just the tip of the iceberg,
in terms of hypothetical utopia
I think

Of course you're right, but I still have to wonder whether, given the choice, if people no longer had to work, or work as hard, to provide for themselves, what would happen?  I don't believe in utopia, once again -- this is only a thought experiment.  But the interesting part to me is that locking the food up seems to be the linchpin making civilization remain essentially what it is.  People must either work, be provided for by someone else, or be homeless.  Unlocking the food would shake all that up.  But I do take your points, for sure.

one of the lynch pins ok
folks still need / want stuff
so money, taxation and standing armies of nation states would be other
lynch pins I suppose

in the 1990's there still were decent documentaries on TV.
I saw some good shows on tribes in the Amazon,
the people were actually naturally happy,
but they lived in an environment they hadn't destroyed
and were adapted to.
today I suppose 90% or so of humans live in seriously compromised environments.
Tribal folks, as you know live their whole lives pretty much surrounded by friends and family. I don't think there is any cure for the ills of civilization as the human organism isn't adapted to it. It's still a paleolithic body - mind. Huxley in 'Brave New World' imagined a 'civilized' world that abolished war, but with the price of being both drugged and genetically manipulated. It was very good science fiction.
But we may get both a drugged and genetically manipulated population, and war, continuing genocide, semi artificial food of some sort and all the other horrors. Even Huxley may have been optimistic, but I suppose, if I'm to be categorized, it would be as an old man with a bleak view.

The human species was never meant by Nature to engage in conducting civilization. We're simply not equipped by our evolution to be able to make it work. Perhaps that is why we are so bad at it.

I can see two major problems with unlocking the food.

1) People have to work to produce the food. So it's not quite possible to have 'free' food (unless you lived in Polynesia I suppose).

2) Everyone could work to produce their own food, but not everyone has land on which to do so. You'd have to 'unlock' private property to give everyone a chance to do this.

Apparently, you choose to ignore the 45 million+ americans on food stamps.  Did they have a right to all that free food?  Wake the fuck up, it's already happening, your dream of socialism when all can eat for free is here.  Be happy, don't worry, the food stamps are a right that has been unlocked.  But, you're soon gonna find out what 45+ million pissed off hungry entitled idiots are capable of.  And it ain't pretty.

BOOM! You gotta it right there IMO. Our species is so woefully inequipped to deal with our current living situation from what I can see. Pretty much every problem we face, as far as I can see, is due to the fact that technology and overpopulation has forced us past our natural way of living in our environment (earth).

It probably started off as a great idea, but humans, as we so typically are, ruined it with greediness and corruption. And course that's so easy when those things affect those you do not knot personally.

Can you image with holding food from a aquiantance? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't, even if it weren't for feeling bad about it, for the fact that you'd know if the situation were reversed you'd be up shit creek.

It's a subject I've often considered DQ. It's definitely a problem IMO.

I sort of gave up on this whole human adventure a long time ago. I've divorced myself from it emotionally. I think the human race has squandered its gift and this country has squandered its promise. I think people in America sold out very cheaply, for sneakers and cheeseburgers. And I don't think it's fixable.
--George Carlin

That's been my only way of dealing with it, even if I still feel enraged (emotional) about it from time to time.

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Here's another relevant quotation from our friend GC:

Quote:
"We have to change ourselves. And we'll never do that. Because of the dollars now. Cause everybody wants a dollar and a toy. Everybody's got a telephone that will make pancakes and rub your balls. So nobody wants to rock the boat. Nobody wants to change anything.

We are on a nice downward glide. I call it circling the drain. And the circles get smaller and smaller and faster and faster. And you watch the sink empty. Huish!

I then we'll be gone. And that's fine. I welcome it. I wish I could live 1000 years to watch it happen. From a distance - so I can see it all.

- Does that depress you? -

No, it lifts me up! It lifts me up, because I gave up on this stuff. I gave up on my species and my fellow countrymen. Because I think we squandered a great gifts. I think humans were given great great gifts: walking upright, binocular vision, opposable thumb, large brain... making tools, language, learning... Great gifts! And we gave it all up for both money and God. [...]

We gave it all up to superstition, primitive superstition, primitive shit. An invisible man in the sky, looking down, keeping track of what we do, make sure we don't do the wrong thing, if we do, he puts us in hell, where we burn forever.... That kind of shit is very limiting for the brain we have. So we keep ourselves limited.

And then we want a toy and a gizmo and gold and shiny things, and we want something to plug that will make big things for us... And all this shit is nothing! It's nothing.

And Americans, who also had great gifts... When you take the theory of democratic rule - self government. OK, they started off wrong: they owned slaves, they didn't let women vote, they didn't let people who didn't own land vote, fine, they started on the wrong foot. But the ideas were good. And we fuckin' blew that! We polluted it with this stuff, things, material goods, gains, gizmos, toys gadgets, having possessions...

"Ah, he's got a bigger truck! Did you see his truck? It's bigger than mine! I'm getting a new truck! Oh, and he has a DVD on it? Oh, I gotta have a DVD too!"

Please... whatever happened?.... And that's why I'm divorced from it now. I see it from a distance. I got myself a divorce. I said: "George, you have no stake at this, you don't care one way or another. So watch it, have fun."

You know what, I said it this way: when you're born in this world, you are given a ticket to the freak show. And when you're born in America, you're given a front row seat. And some of us get to sit there with notebooks. And I'm a notebook kind of guy: (writing) "Oh, my God, did you see that?" And I watch the freak show, and I kept my notes, and I make up stuff about it, and I talk about the freaks. And the freaks are all humans, and they are all like me, and we are all the same. I'm not better, I'm not different, I'm just a part now. But I don't have a stake at the outcome. I'm not a cheerleader for a given outcome now.

Oh, they say if you scratch a cynic, you'll find a disappointed idealist. And I would admit, that somewhere underneath all this there's a little flicker of a flame of idealism that would love to see it all - huish - change. But it can't happen that way. And incremental change - it just seems the pile of shit is too deep."

every place we colonized we wiped out the easy to kill species very quickly -- all over the globe

and humans are as horny as those diseases that kill the host. Diseases have 2 'choices' to avoid dying out themselves, become very contagious so you can kill your host and still survive as a species, or become less virulent, so you don't actually kill your host. (Or a combination become somewhat more contagious and kill the host very slowly)

Since human's can't control their birthrate and are killing their host, they are a disease on the verge of extinction. Also there is no 2nd host to infect.

Some Monks and nuns maybe the sanest among these arrogant horny primates. But regardless it looks like the show is almost over.

Yes, in geological time civilized humans will have been a blip.  I think technology has gotten us into a lot of trouble, but honestly at this point, it seems to me that the only thing that can save us from ourselves is a technological singularity.  If that is what's going to happen.  Take control of the planet away from humans before they start setting off nukes.  As long as nuclear weapons exist, they are probably the biggest threat.  And as long as they're around, they'll probably get used sooner or later.  If some network of AI's can take that away, it will give the planet some breathing room.  And from there, well, AI will be smart so it will think of something.

Without an AI singularity to take control of the planet away from humans, I think we are fully doomed -- and in the not-too-long term.

this brings up how do we measure “fully doomed “
all dead? or just all suffering constantly?
if we use suffering,
much of humanity is already in bad shape:
most of the ‘3rd world’ perhaps?
next everyone in a war zone,
next all the really obese Americans,
refuge camps in Africa
many in countries with gross human rights abuses
etc.

or we could use delusion as part of our yardstick:
I would include all soldiers as being seriously deluded
even the rich stock  brokers

why go on?

if the yard stick isn’t: ‘all dead’. I would guess it’s already well underway for the mass of humanity and the planet (especially once the GMOs and cloning experiments get loose, (we already have antibiotic resistent bacteria & pesticide resistant insects)). It’s not just global warming, chernybl, 3mile island, & fukashima & the plastic ‘island’ in the pacific, it’s a world wide half century of chemical dumping, with fracking now adding to water pollution and causing earthquakes in Oklahoma, what else? ozone hole, decaying infrastructure, more nuclear power plants in earthquake zones (New York State), or near rising sea levels, left over live land mines maiming people, … stop me somebody!

I think “AI singularity “ is pure Sci-fi. I agree with George, the planet will be fine. The roaches were here before us and will be here after us. No problem. unless as you say the nukes go off or another cosmic collision like the one that got the dinosaurs happens. We were never promised a rose garden after all.

I often wondered as a young boy why we had to pay for food.  It seemed to me that everyone ought to live for free.  Thirty years later I still don't have an answer.

Sounds angry or frustrated.

Didn't sound either of those.

The world grows plenty and plenty of food.
It doesnt need GMO's.

Well I think extinction is a plausible possibility, and that's what I meant.  If not severe population loss.  Yeah, we're already doing quite badly.  But like I said, all things being equal, if nukes can't be taken off the table they'll be used eventually.  And as you know, that is a zero-sum game.
