locking up the food
    #23075045 -

The greatest scam in the history of the world is the practice of putting the food under lock-and-key.  And when you think about it, this one factor is what's keeping entire civilizations in their regular orbit.  Just imagine what would happen if people no longer had to work to eat (or get medicated).  If the storehouses of food were ever to be unlocked, very interesting things would happen.

I often wondered as a young boy why we had to pay for food.  It seemed to me that everyone ought to live for free.  Thirty years later I still don't have an answer.

To regulate it so we don't run out of food. The choice is between either some starving or all starving.

We waste a lot of food in this country.  We just throw it away.  There is plenty of food to go around.  Just tell people they can't take more than they can eat in a given time period.  Problem solved.

(And I'm not really advocating here -- this is more of a thought experiment.  I don't think this will ever happen).

Also, the fact is that the United States produces more food per annum than its population can eat.  There is plenty of food being produced here.  My proposal would be viable by the numbers, with some minimum of regulations.

But like I said above, I'm not holding my breath.

there was this programme where a woman who was host for one of them exposing fraud type stuff met this coupld who got food from those tips outside supermarkets where they just waste food, throwing it away if the sell by date is just a day etc over, but food's alright. So we saw this scene where they go at noght to this food dumpster and start getting food out, and then comes along mr security guard who asks them 'ey what are you doing?!' and starts threatening them with the police. So the guy who is quite savvy calls his bluff, but also asks why they can't have it, and the guard says 'BECAUSE IT IS PRIVATE PROPERTY'!!! so even the stuff they throw away is to these shtty prophet-obsessed fiends private property. This is example is just how fked everything is

we have all seen also how people have been arrested for handing free food out to people who are hungry?

this just says loud and clear that in order for this oppressive set up to work they need us to be totally dependent on money and their 'free market'. What a joke

So a honor system? That seems like a total pipe dream to me.

Sounds angry or frustrated. Doesn't seem all situations and times and places are the same. Some times and places there is surplus, sometimes not.

According to Marvin Harris the human sacrifice of humans, by the Aztec, was actually a protein source for the elite of that society.

I don't believe governments are responsible for all human suffering.

Generally speaking outside of hunter gather society things go downhill.
But there never was any divine decree that there must be justice in the world. Seems to me to expect it is a setup for suffering.

In a 'civilized' society we can use the court system to try and get some 'justice', which is fine and we can aspire to be kind - but to assume the universe has some morality, or should have some morality seems a setup for unfulfilled expectations & suffering.

One of the things that goes wrong outside of hunter gather society is biological, namely the inability of humans to regulate their birthrate which requires nursing infants for 3 or more years (without modern contraception -- which 'nature' obviously outwits). And food supply and birth rate interact. So once again, seems to me it's not all governments' fault.

And there never was any divine decree that food will always be plentiful. Societies have also dealt differently with how the unproductive, old. feeble and so on are dealt with.

But it would be nice if there were easy answers for all circumstances.
That's the sort of notion we get from politicians & our sound byte culture.

I think we had capitalism before we got our consumer capitalism. It was a manufacturing and agricultural capitalism. It was already inhumane, and now it's surreal. So I agree that there is a lot of unnecessary meanness in American culture. But I don't think there are simple solutions.

Most political power in the world is an artifact of artificial scarcity. basically the reasons why we don't have free food, security etc. is because those things have been taken from us in order to control us more easily.

Everyone can eat for free if they produce/procure food on their own or organize themselves within a commune. There is still scarcity in some foods, and a diversity of desires and needs. Up until recently, we've lacked the expedient means to organize a large scale commune and distribute food transparently and equally. I don't think it could be done before without a lot of distrust and shadiness outside of the local tribe.

I wonder what form this telling people they can't take more than they can eat would take. It seems like money is the easiest means of arranging such a system. How the money is distributed is another question. Someone is going to do a runner with all the wild salmon and maple syrup at some point, so it would still need to be locked up.

Perhaps with abundant, transparent surveillance the tribe could self-moderate on a large scale and ostracize the hoarders. A million black marks on one's public profile might rein in that behaviour rather quickly.

Productivity data on all the crops can be aggregated and made available already. Margins of sustainability can be monitored and efforts reassigned in the case of harvested resources. It would require communal ownership of all the resources related to food production I think, and the forfeiture of privacy in our eating habits, which has pretty much happened already. Basically, we'd have supermarkets with free food stamps for everyone, no sales and marketing bullshit, near-immediate price scaling based on scarcity, and a lot less stuff in the dumpster. I wonder who would gut the fish and stock the shelves...

A big if. Obviously many of you are idealists and have never traveled in the 3rd world.

Exactly contrary to what you all say is that if you want free meals just go to prison. That's where the state gives free meals, oh and the military.

What a silly idealist yardstick.

google some images folks Banladesh, refugee camps, use you imaginations, how about gettos of Brazil, how about effect of inflation in collapsing economies, how about drought, ---how about a web search of disease world wide and reasons for it?

Humans have been messing things up for a long time, in many ways, in a world that never promised comfort to begin with.

I never made it to Bangladesh, but I was in the neighbourhood for quite a while.

Big if -- I agree. 'Everyone' was not the best word choice. The point was to isolate conditions in which free food is practical.

It's just amazing the delusions of the people above ground as to what is going on under ground.  Every year literally hundreds of thousands of people disappear, never to be seen again.  Where did they go?

In likely the year 2030, the humans above ground will likely find out about the aliens living underground and sometimes flying around too, are going to take over the earth for good.  Or maybe for evil, but it's going to happen.  In the meantime, the gov helps with the aliens food supply from the adrenal glands etc. that the aliens demand.  As long as that steady stream of meat goes down in the DUMB tunnels, we will be safe above.  Well most of us will be.

Check out Phil Schneiders last interview on youtube, you can find the link if you google it.

Before we moved to where we are now there were a few years where we only bought condiments and a few staples like flour and sugar, and these we get from the menanites for super cheap. A great garden, hunting, foraging, fishing, took care of 85% of our food cost, spent $60 in ammo and had plenty for a couple years.

meanwhile back in the real world chaos proceeds as usual:

"The Food and Drug Administration today proposed a new limit for the level of arsenic allowed in infant rice cereal.

After an extensive study of arsenic levels in food, the FDA proposed a limit of 100 parts per billion (ppb) for inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal. The agency's testing has shown that most infant rice cereals now on the market (around 80 percent) already meet, or are close to meeting, this requirement, the FDA said."

yup give me free government approved food
yup give free healthy food to folks that want to eat at Mcdonalds
yup teach millions in gehettos to hunt

of course it's natural to want easy solutions
of course it's natural to want to want someone or something to blame
I suppose to raise healthy kids parents pretend the world is nice
(birthday parties, Christmas, all the rules of how we should behave...)
and end up believing their own nonsense
the dinosaurs went extinct, as did all the mega fauna, etc.
that's what nature does
and she's just getting started

The river next to me is dying.  The forests are dying.  The trees drop limbs for no apparent reason other than they are dying.  The salmon run is being cancelled due to lack of salmon.  The Pacific ocean is in death mode.  The aluminum in the soil and high pH from the toxic heavy metal death raining down on the earth makes gardening outside virtually impossible.  Plants get 30% less sunlight and 1000% more UV from the SRM program and massive holes in the ozone layer as a result.

The economy is 75% related to food production.  Well, you ain't seen nothing yet as the food won't grow unless it's some freak show seed from the boys at Monsanto that can tolerate drought aluminum and alkaline pH.  Wake the fuck up people, we are in some serious trouble here.  There won't be anything worth locking up, just some GMO soybeans and bT corn.

Thanks for all the interesting responses guys.  As I said above, this was only a hypothetical scenario.  Clearly, as you all have spelled out, there are many functional limitations to unlocking the food.  I was just wondering what the situation would be if people no longer had to work for the privilege to remain alive.  In an ideal world, access to food would be a basic human right.  Of course, basic human rights are not very well enforced in this world, obviously.  I'm under no illusion that the term 'basic human right' means much of anything in most places on this planet.  Anyway, good responses.
