Yeah for sure. Some people say they like drugs, but they are only doing them on the weekends. I really like drugs so I am on them at least 105+ hours a week. Like my dad taught me... If you're gonna do something, do it right.

I'm curious how you measure the success of these people. Salary figure? Status symbols? Number of children in college? Professional advancement? Number of hobbies? Self expressed happiness?

I think it's crazy to feel like you have to work more than 40 hours a week to find success. There is more to life. But then again, I am glad that people find or create things that they care about enough to work endlessly on.

I mean, it sounds like you've worked your ass off, and created a successful business, and therefore, a good life for yourself. But deciding to work an extra 20 hours a week overtime at a minimum wage job is hardly the same thing- making a couple extra bucks doesn't necessarily equate to success or happiness.

Are you serious? I can't figure out if you're being sarcastic or not.

Not at all.  Everybody I know who has achieved anything has put in more than 40 hours a week.

I think there's some truth to that actually, even look at musicians, painters, writers, non-typical types, in order to excel at what they do they do it A LOT. I probably draw for like 40 hrs a week on top of classes and 15-20 hrs of part time job. If I was free to simply pursue art, I'm the kind of dude who'd be mostly doing 10-12 hr days (I'm obsessive as fuck)

so, basically, yeah

My typical work week is about 70hrs, right now its closer to 40hrs.

Don't think its necessary for most people to work that much, there's a reason I've given up so much personal time and it hasn't been easy.

I used to work for a marketing company, it was 100% commission. I started off as a lowly sales rep. Work started at 8:30am, we would hit the field at 10ish and be back at the office by 6:00pm. We'd have a closing meeting and by 7:00ish I would go back out and hit the streets to keep working until 10-11pm.

I did this 7 days a week for over a year and a half. Never took a full day off, always worked all day or at least part of he day. Christmas morning I woke up at like 3:30 am and went to the busiest gas station in town and worked until my family called my to come home for Christmas.

I went from a entry level sales rep to being promoted to Jr partner of the company. Hard work finally paid off, they actually gave me a percentage of the company!

You do have to work more than 40 hours a week if you want to achieve greatness, but to have a great full life that's a lot of fun and has a ton of adventure and love, you don't have to work so hard.

I didn't like living like a mega worker, it was fun to brag and I felt real good about myself. But working constantly is not how I want to live my life anymore. Now I take it easy, make more than any of my friends I'm pretty sure so I'm not in some rush jump back in with 80 hour work weeks.

Why is there this false notion that people are trapped in minimum wage careers?  Minimum wage is a starting wage.  If you are still making minimum wage after a year at a job you have pretty much demonstrated that you are either an imbecile or a slacker bum.  You work the extra hours to gain more experience and to demonstrate a work ethic which almost invariably gets you a raise.  If it doesn't go work elsewhere.

I took plenty of drugs.  Taking drugs was not my goal like it seems to be for so many here.  It was a reward I gave myself AFTER I put my hours in.  I did not work to do drugs.  I had other ambitions.  If your ambition is to get high then fine.  Live in a refrigerator box and dive in dumpsters for food.  I have no sympathy for you.

I don't specifically mean you Lynnch.  I don't think you are that guy.  But there are more than a few of them here.

Typically you only have to bust those hours at the beginning.  Especially in sales.  After a while you develop a cadre of reliable clients and you can scale back the hours on cruise control.  It is brutal at the beginning, though.  This is part of why I tell people not to have kids until they are established.  After you are established you don't have to hustle new work as much.

I agree with everything in your last two posts.

Interestingly enough, my income means nothing to me, I could well live off minimum wage.

However, having worked hard towards my personal goals for years - which are entwined with my career. I can easily charge $25hr as a base wage (potentially much more), or take side jobs which pay an equivalent wage. Without even trying to increase my income, I've far exceeded the minimum wage.

Though I don't think someone's income matters as much as how they manage it (including whether they have kids), or what their goals are in general.

because theres millions and millions of people here in the states who no matter how hard they work or how well they do at a job get screwed. not everyone can get a degree or a job with that degree and lets face it, companies have been cutting pay, benefits, and making as many people temp as possible specifically because they can just use their temp status as an excuse to never give them a raise.

I just started a job as a temp for amazon, and only 2 people out of 20 who are working there were even there last year, there are only 3 actual amazon employees and everyone else is an outsourced temp. when they get close to a raise or cause any problems at all, all a manager for amazon has to do is pick up the phone and that person is out of a job.

You don't have to work minimum wage or work as a temp.

Instead of looking for a job after you quit or get fired, start looking for a better place now. Don't apply for anything minimum wage, it's that simple.

I worked for minimum wage once, and as a temp once. After those jobs I said I was never gonna do that bullshit again, so I never applied at a temp agency or a fast food place again.

I am so sorry that you have given up.  Do you know why there are so many temp jobs now?  Obamacare.

Go into fucking construction.  You get paid what you are worth because construction companies compete for labor.  The temp issue doesn't come up because they are usually less than 50 employees.  In regard to firing I will fire you for any reason I want.  I don't care.  But just because it is such a pain in the ass to get a new employee I let a good bit go for a little while before I drop the hammer.  I will give you ample time to shape up but if you don't you are gone.

Degree shmegree.  Its value has been so debased in the years since I got mine it is basically a ticket to nothing.

Just out of curiosity, what would be the first step one would take to start a career in construction? I have zero experience or connections in that field but it sounds like it could be a fulfilling and well paying job. Same deal with quite a few other skilled trades.
