No, are you saying you have proof that souls don't incarnate anywhere else? If not, then it must be treated as possibility, no?

As I said, there are  various notions about the afterlife among Jews and ideas of heaven and hell are included. See this link:http://www.interfaithfamily.com/life_cycle/death_and_mourning/Jewish_Views_on_the_Afterlife.shtml

Ideas of heaven and hell also exist in other religious which predate Christianity, such as Toaism. Also, Jesus, himself a Jew, referred to a "heavenly kingdom" and I already pointed out, the Old Testament says that Elijah was taken up to heaven. Do you have any response or are just going to reiterate your unsubstatiated claim that heaven and hell was invented by the Catholic Church?

Missionaries have said to my face that if someone has not heard of Jesus before and so doesnt know to believe in him, but lives the most holy life making the world a better place with every act they do....  That they will burn in hell and be tortured for all eternity because they didnt believe in Jesus.  But a murderer who believes in Jesus goes to heaven.  Sounds crazy to me personally, but if youre into it then good for you.

This is where I am confused. You claim you studied the Bible for years and yet you apparently get your theology from fundamentalist missionaries?  Thats like if I tried to prove western medicine was a fraud by citing the work of the biggest quack doctors (not that i am a fan of western medicine but the existence of quack doctors by no means implies that all doctors are quacks).

There are over 40,000 different Christian denominations. I thought we were discussing the Bible and not modern day Christianity, but if you are going to go down that road at least stick with the Catholic Church since you already accused them of inventing heaven and hell, they dont however teach that a good person ignorant of Jesus will go to hell. Nor does the Bible teach that.

basically, I find it dissapointing that you studied the Bible for years and the best you can come up with is "if a good person doesn't believe in Jesus they go to hell".

In the Jewish tradition heaven is where God lives, but not where you go after death.  Big difference there.  In Jewish tradition you go to Sheol.

Also - Jesus is not a historical person but a myth, so not really a reliable source of info.  http://ambrosiatechfiles.webr.ly/did-jesus-exist

I mentioned that it was a common Christian belief.

According to Catholics you need to repent, believe in their God and get baptized to go to heaven.  So not that different - good people still go to hell if they dont believe, or even if they do believe but arent baptized.  Sounds pretty messed up to me.

Just for fun - lets look at some awesome wise bible verses that should make everyone think every word of the book is pure wisdom!

1 Samuel 15:3: "This is what the Lord Almighty says ... 'Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.' "

Psalm 137, which celebrates this terrible revenge: "Happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us / He who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks."

this endorsement of female subservience in Ephesians 5:22, "Wives, submit to you husbands as to the Lord"; and similar advice for slaves in 1 Peter 2:18: "Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel."

Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material. Leviticus 19:19

Thou shalt not boil a kid in its mother’s milk. Exodus 23:19

When a woman has a discharge, if her discharge in her body is blood, she shall continue in her menstrual impurity for seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening. Everything also on which she lies during her menstrual impurity shall be unclean, and everything on which she sits shall be unclean. Leviticus 15: 19-20

Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys. 2 Kings 2:23-25 NIV

Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. Matthew 21:18-22 NIV

Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves. Numbers 31:17-18

You may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT

Exodus 21:20-21 – "If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property."

Ephesians 6:5 - "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ."

1 Peter 2:13 - "Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority."

1 Timothy 2:11-12 – "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent."

Exodus 22:20 - "Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed."

1 Corinthians 16:22 - "If anyone does not love the Lord—a curse be on him."

Psalm 58:10 - The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.

.....

I could keep going because there is no end to the evil found in the Bible.  I cant believe anyone would want to follow a God who inspires words and scripture like this.  Just horrible stuff that I know I would never want to associate with personally.

Dude, you're missing the point. You claimed that the Catholic Church invented heaven and hell. It's not true. It doesn't matter if Jews believe "heaven is where God lives" that still supports the idea that Jews had a notion of heaven. It was simply more difficult to get there (although supposeldly Elijah pulled it off).

Whether Jesus was mythological or a real person is also completely beside the point. The Catholic Church is not the only source of information about Jesus, therefore statements attributed to him count as evidence for theological ideas and beliefs outside of Catholic doctrine. He spoke of heaven, that means the idea existed outside of Catholic thought even if he didn't actually exist. it proves *Someone* had to think it/say it and to write it down even if it wasn't actually a man named Jesus. Nor is it proven that the Jesus story was not based off a real person, but that is so beside the point.

Next, your theology is still wrong. The good thief on the cross, never baptized, is considered a saint (meaning he is even heaven) by the Catholic Church.

Okay, maybe I should have clarified that the Catholic church invented the idea of heaven and hell as places you go after death, and that they created the devil and hell all on their own using inspiration from pagan religions so that they could then demonize those religions and massacre them.

Seems like a silly semantic to argue over though, but if you want to split hairs I guess that is up to you.

I'm not splitting hairs, you simply refuse to acknowledge that these ideas found their origin in Judaism, and probably go back even further than that. For example:

Traditional Judaism firmly believes that death is not the end of human existence. However, because Judaism is primarily focused on life here and now rather than on the afterlife, Judaism does not have much dogma about the afterlife, and leaves a great deal of room for personal opinion. It is possible for an Orthodox Jew to believe that the souls of the righteous dead go to a place similar to the Christian heaven, or that they are reincarnated through many lifetimes, or that they simply wait until the coming of the messiah, when they will be resurrected. Likewise, Orthodox Jews can believe that the souls of the wicked are tormented by demons of their own creation, or that wicked souls are simply destroyed at death, ceasing to exist.
Biblical References to the Afterlife

Some scholars claim that belief in the afterlife is a teaching that developed late in Jewish history. It is true that the Torah emphasizes immediate, concrete, physical rewards and punishments rather than abstract future ones. See, for example, Lev. 26:3-9 and Deut. 11:13-15. However, there is clear evidence in the Torah of belief in existence after death. The Torah indicates in several places that the righteous will be reunited with their loved ones after death, while the wicked will be excluded from this reunion.

The Torah speaks of several noteworthy people being "gathered to their people." See, for example, Gen. 25:8 (Abraham), 25:17 (Ishmael), 35:29 (Isaac), 49:33 (Jacob), Deut. 32:50 (Moses and Aaron) II Kings 22:20 (King Josiah). This gathering is described as a separate event from the physical death of the body or the burial.

Certain sins are punished by the sinner being "cut off from his people." See, for example, Gen. 17:14 and Ex. 31:14. This punishment is referred to as kareit (kah-REHYT) (literally, "cutting off," but usually translated as "spiritual excision"), and it means that the soul loses its portion in the World to Come.

Later portions of the Tanakh speak more clearly of life after death and the World to Come. See Dan. 12:2, Neh. 9:5.
Resurrection and Reincarnation

Belief in the eventual resurrection of the dead is a fundamental belief of traditional Judaism. It was a belief that distinguished the Pharisees (intellectual ancestors of Rabbinical Judaism) from the Sadducees. The Sadducees rejected the concept, because it is not explicitly mentioned in the Torah. The Pharisees found the concept implied in certain verses... http://www.jewfaq.org/olamhaba.htm

The Catholic Church did not create ideas like heaven and hell (which as I pointed out already, have various expressions in other, older religions also like Hinduism and Toaism). What the Catholic Church did was define a specific doctrine that it's adherents were told to believe in.

Not only in Judaism, but also within early Christianity there were many varying ideas, beliefs and viewpoints about not just heaven and hell, but the nature of Jesus, how one is saved, which books were inspired etc. What the Catholic Church fathers did, was create a unified doctrine of belief that all Christians were supposed to adhere to. They didn't create the idea of heaven and hell itself, rather they framed the particular version of Christianity that went on to become dominant.

Secondly, although the popular understanding of heaven and hell is often places one goes after death, this is not what the Catholic Church actually teaches.

In three controversial Wednesday Audiences, Pope John Paul II pointed out that the essential characteristic of heaven, hell or purgatory is that they are states of being of a spirit (angel/demon) or human soul, rather than places, as commonly perceived and represented in human language. This language of place is, according to the Pope, inadequate to describe the realities involved, since it is tied to the temporal order in which this world and we exist. In this he is applying the philosophical categories used by the Church in her theology and saying what St. Thomas Aquinas said long before him.

"Incorporeal things are not in place after a manner known and familiar to us, in which way we say that bodies are properly in place; but they are in place after a manner befitting spiritual substances, a manner that cannot be fully manifest to us." [St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae, Supplement, Q69, a1, reply 1]

http://www.ewtn.com/library/papaldoc/jp2heavn.htm

If you read the early Church Fathers, you will see they emphasized entering the "heaven" of heart centered consciousness, in this life, and not as some after life reward for good behavior. The idea of heaven as an afterlife reward came about as a consolation to those who failed to attain what the church calls "theosis" or "divinazation" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theosis_%28Eastern_Orthodox_theology%29) in this life, essentially saying if you don't complete your journey fear not, you will be liberated at death or at least get to pick up more or less where you left off (Purgatory).

I'm not an expert on the histrocity of Jesus but most scholars believe Jesus was an actual person and there are some references to him from non Christian sources. Either way, my argument does not rest on the statements made by Jesus as I have already shown that the Christian understanding of the afterlife is something which can be said to have developed out of Jewish ideas. I'm not saying that the church was right to create a single doctrine, but you make it sound like heaven and hell was just something the Church made up out of thin air and I have been trying to show that's not the case.

There is no hell or even any devil in the Jewish scripture.  Ha Satan is a title they use to apply to many different spirits who work for God (such as archangel Sammael).  Heaven in Jewish lore refers to Gods house, and Sheol is where the dead go - this is why Jews place rocks on graves of their dead.

Have you ever spent much time with Jewish people?  My family happens to be Jewish and I have spent some time in Israel....  You never hear Jews say "be good or you will burn in hell for eternity!"  (because they dont believe in hell)

Saying people are gathered or cut from each other isnt the same as saying they go to heaven or hell, and there is no hell in the Jewish bible. Hell is the church combining ideas from Greek and other pagan lore so they can scare people into following orders and giving them money.

We can keep going back and forth on this if you want, but it seems silly to me....

BTW - if you think there is any historical evidence of Jesus, you should certainly read this article because you must be confused or misinformed.  This article is great though and goes through point by point the lack of historical evidence: http://ambrosiatechfiles.webr.ly/did-jesus-exist

Only the very righteous go directly to Gan Eden. The average person descends to a place of punishment and/or purification, generally referred to as Gehinnom (guh-hee-NOHM) (in Yiddish, Gehenna), but sometimes as She'ol or by other names. According to one mystical view, every sin we commit creates an angel of destruction (a demon), and after we die we are punished by the very demons that we created. Some views see Gehinnom as one of severe punishment, a bit like the Christian Hell of fire and brimstone. Other sources merely see it as a time when we can see the actions of our lives objectively, see the harm that we have done and the opportunities we missed, and experience remorse for our actions. The period of time in Gehinnom does not exceed 12 months, and then ascends to take his place on Olam Ha-Ba.

Only the utterly wicked do not ascend at the end of this period; their souls are punished for the entire 12 months. Sources differ on what happens at the end of those 12 months: some say that the wicked soul is utterly destroyed and ceases to exist while others say that the soul continues to exist in a state of consciousness of remorse. (from the same link)

thats really not too far off the Catholic idea, even the 12 month period which sounds un Christian actually makes sense when you take into account the idea of Purgatory.

There is no mention of the after life in the Torah, which is why Jewish opinion differs.  For the most part, Jews are left to imagine their own afterlife, so people could imagine it any number of ways.

However, I have never heard any Jewish person claim there is a hell where people suffer for eternity in.

There is even a tale that in the afterlife Moses sits and teaches everyone Torah all day long.  Funny part of this is that for some that would be heaven and for others that would be hell!

I dont think you can say any one view is the Jewish view since there is no official view, but just some musings.  They dont talk about it often.  There is an idea in Jewish culture that focusing too much on the afterlife leads people astray.

I didn't say there was any one view, that was the point. There were various musings among Jews and also among early Christians. Then the Catholic Church decided to unify believers under an official doctrine. This was done both to help the church survive as well to gain political power most likely. The church gained strength but it lost diversity and flexibility and that's why Christianity has developed into a rather rigid religion.
