We need YOU
    #2298441 -

Ever heard of Folding@Home? Ever seen the link to the team on the main page? The basic idea of this whole program is a concept called distributed computing, which allows certain processes to be distributed between many computers allowing a result to be reached many times quicker. Shroomery is currently rank # 193 out of a 1000s and our rank is still getting better. My theory is that if we make the front page (one of the top 100 teams), people will wonder what kind of site we are, and we may get some new members. It could even possibly get the whole theme about shroomery out, and show a site as ours isn't disorganized and incompetent as many of the blissfully ignorant public think about the shrooming community. It may just be a dream far from reach, but its worth a shot. Grab an old computer or even the one you're running and DOWNLOAD the software, and add a username and team # 12679. You can choose the screensaver client, which will run as a screensaver (won't interfere with normal computer use) or just the graphical client and set a % of CPU to be used. It involves no maintenance whatsoever! Anyone can run it, and use as much CPU % whenever they like (small amounts as to not interfere with operations and gaming). Every little bit helps.

The point of this graph is to calculate present and future totals in relation to other teams, the projected totals are calculated and recalculated on a hourly basis, and the projected totals reflect the growing amount of points per day and the growing amount of users. If the users have been increasing like they are, we could jump 10 spots in the next few weeks.

Actually, it is only supposed to use cpu % that is not currently being used.  So if you're just chillin on the shroomery, it gets lots of cpu to use and you won't even notice its there.  I've let it run while I've played graphics intensive modern computer games and it doesn't seem to slow them down either.  It probably doesn't get much work done though so just stay on the shroomery, two birds one stone

We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Are you aware that there is no post in  The FAH Forum Team Page for the Shroomery?  I think that might introduce some new people to the Shroomery, as well as boost our team performance.  People come to that forum looking for teams to join, and I think a post with the Shroomery logo and a link could get us some new memebers.  Just a thought.  :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

Re: We need YOU [Re: TinMan]
    #2380850 -

i've got a problem. i had not run the computer with the fah program running on it for a couple weeks. i turned it back on and now it says it "can't find work instructions."

there is a blank under the "working on" section and "w/u progress" is staying at 0/0, even though the computer has been on for two days now.

anyone else experience this? the computer has not been online since i turned it back on because i am now connecting to the net via a wireless lan using my laptop. my desktop running the program can not be connected to this wireless lan and currently has no other means of connecting to the internet.

i think one possibility for the programs behavior is that maybe it finished the first 400 or 600 wu and needs to go online to send that progress and download a new work packet. is there a way to save the program's files and progress to disk and put it on my new computer? both computers are equipped with cdrw drives. desktop runs win 98, laptop runs xp. i don't know how to network these computers or i would have already done so.

Yea, after finishing a "Work Unit" (WU), FAH needs to connect to the internet to send the results and download a new WU. I don't think trasferring files to your new computer would be worth it, just download FAH and enter the same name and team # I guess.

(gen. reply) But FAH only needs to go online when it finishes a WU, and it uses a small portion of your bandwith for a short period of time. So if anyone is worried about FAH slowing down your internet connection, there's nothing to worry about. The Shroomery seems to be stuck at 188-189th place, lets get into the top 100!

If I try to start the service manually I get the message that some files are missing.

> 1-what is the purpous of this?

To figure out how proteins, the building blocks of life and disease, form. By understanding how this stuff works, we should be able to figure out why some diseases work, and perhaps find cures.

> 2-what exactly does my joining contribute?

Computation time.

> 3-if i download im i hosting part of the site or somthing?

You are hosting a small program that runs in the background on your computer. The small program calculates part of the folding (formation) of a protein.

> 4-will there be uploading from me to anywhere? i have strict upload limits with my provider

Yes, the results of the computation are uploaded to the stanford servers. The upload is pretty small and only happens when you begin or finish a work unit. Maybe a meg of data once every day or two, at most, on a fast machine.

> 5-i dont keep teh computer on all the time, maybe 10 hours a day. can you turn on/shut this thing off any time without it messing up?

Yep, not a problem at all. You will finish work slower, but every little bit helps.

Glad to have you on the team!

FAH does uninstall cleanly; in fact the console version doesn't even have an uninstaller, you just remove the directory. Hopefully this won't even be an issue though, as the software runs so transparently I doubt you'll feel the need to uninstall it.

Thanks again for helping this good cause!

Depends on the work unit you have and your computer speed and how long you let it run... most work units take at least a day (of computer time) to complete and some take much longer. You only transmit data to send results back or fetch a new work unit, which is why there is not much network usage.

Yeah we've been stalled between 114 and 116 for a while now. It's going to take a big push to make it into the top 100. So close yet so far... come on everybody lend a hand!

Good idea, let's give that a try for a little while.

Unfortunately as long as this thread is a global announcement it will be closed to replies, but if anyone has any questions they can PM me or post in Website Announcements and Feedback.

Peace,
