Sounds very intresting. I will try to install this. I have used something similar (SETI@home) but there are limits for how many years I can sit here and wait for extraterrestial life I guess. I have fiberoptics and several fast boxes availble

Type 'top' from a shell, you should see the F@H binary at the top of the list using most of your CPU time (assuming you aren't in the middle of rendering a 3D movie or something ).

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

I wonder if anyone will check this. Well when i downloaded and installed folding on a second 'puter in the house, It is not "working"yet, whereas mine started before i could open the display. They are not networked, and i used a simmilar but different name. I know alot of ppl r using more than 1 sys. Does anyone recognize this problem? What to do? I'll work on it too and post the results...

I really dont get what this thing is.  can someone help me out.

1-what is the purpous of this?
2-what exactly does my joining contribute?
3-if i download im i hosting part of the site or somthing?
4-will there be uploading from me to anywhere?  i have strict upload limits with my provider
5-i dont keep teh computer on all the time, maybe 10 hours a day.  can you turn on/shut this thing off any time without it messing up?

think thats it....this thing went way over my head

thanks for any explanations.

just read the other pages, makes a little more sense so never mind about questions 1-3.  i am mostly concerned about upload....i dont quite get how we help the simulation speed or whatever.  very confusing to me :frown:

> 1-what is the purpous of this?

To figure out how proteins, the building blocks of life and disease, form. By understanding how this stuff works, we should be able to figure out why some diseases work, and perhaps find cures.

> 2-what exactly does my joining contribute?

Computation time.

> 3-if i download im i hosting part of the site or somthing?

You are hosting a small program that runs in the background on your computer. The small program calculates part of the folding (formation) of a protein.

> 4-will there be uploading from me to anywhere? i have strict upload limits with my provider

Yes, the results of the computation are uploaded to the stanford servers. The upload is pretty small and only happens when you begin or finish a work unit. Maybe a meg of data once every day or two, at most, on a fast machine.

> 5-i dont keep teh computer on all the time, maybe 10 hours a day. can you turn on/shut this thing off any time without it messing up?

Yep, not a problem at all. You will finish work slower, but every little bit helps.

Much better answers to your questions can be found here: http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html

Glad to have you on the team!

FAH does uninstall cleanly; in fact the console version doesn't even have an uninstaller, you just remove the directory. Hopefully this won't even be an issue though, as the software runs so transparently I doubt you'll feel the need to uninstall it.

Thanks again for helping this good cause!
