Birth of a Skeptic
    #2296728 -

Decades ago while staying at Ananda, a spiritual retreat in the Sierra Nevadas, a female friend of mine had just received Kriya Initiation from Swami Kriyananda (no relation). I asked her what it was like. She explained the ceremony and the final part was a transmission of shaktipat as Kriyananda pressed on her eyes with his fingers. She was amazed to see all sorts of colors and got a tingle down her spine.

I asked her, "Was it anything like this?" I then pressed gently, but firmly on her eyes. She gasped "You can transmit kundalini energy, too?"

"Um, no," I replied. I merely activated the phosphenes in your eyes. It will work on anyone. It took a moment for what I told her to set in. Her eyes turned dark, "I hate you!" she screamed then ran off crying.

I was totally puzzled. I thought disillusionment was a good thing - the freeing from illusion so that one may better see what is real.

Today, I am still puzzled by the same reaction when some people find out that their pet mystery is not so mysterious.

Did not Jesus (puh-lease, before you go off, I am not comparing myself to a sage) say something about removing the scales from one's eyes?

You sound just like the guy that wrote the book Powers of Mind. The whole pressing on their eye thing... *looks skeptically at you*
Peace.

poor girl..
she was looking for something to hold on to..

You want to know why people love to stay disillusioned? The chains that hold us provide comfort- they are made of a seemingly indestructible material and it makes us feel safe to have them covering us.

It was good of you to show her.. you unlocked the chains for her- but did she take them off? What happened to her and her experience?

Let sleeping dogs lie. Some people are happier living in an illusion. Just leave them to be. If they want the truth, they'll come looking for it.

For to be a seeker is to be the opposite of a skeptic

yeah well I'm all for making grand statements and all but can you explain this one?

I would think a true seeker would have to be a skeptic, so they can distinguish the BS from the truth but hey, I guess that's just me.

oh I'm not expecting any replies from you

but for anyone else interested: the opposite of a skeptic is someone who is
credulous: ready to believe especially on slight or uncertain evidence
or
gullible: easily duped or cheated

is this how some people characterize seekers?
it certainly sounds that way.
as a seeker myself, I find this highly offensive.

Wow Swami I thought people would be more with you on this one....

I think you taught her an extremely valuable lesson, and she probably won't get "spiritually scammed" ever again.

Seems some here completely miss the point. I was a seeker the same as the young woman (age 23) as I was there to learn and not trying to pop her bubble. I was later hoping to go through the same ceremony. I fully expected her to say, "No, it was nothing at all like that," and was as surprised as she was. I did not "make her" cry, it was her own disappointment. As to sincerity, I sold everything I owned and quit a great job to go there for the purpose of discovery.

Footnote: Swami Kriyananda was eventually expelled from the community he founded for using his authoritarian position to sexually abuse women. His selfishness tarnished the reputation of this organization and cost them millions. Guess those women that exposed his dalliances were also arrogant bashers that should have kept quiet so as not disturb other's fallacious views.

People seem to want ends not means, and I think what is resented is being forced to admit that there are just means and only one end. Does this hold water?
