The casings purpose is to hold moisture, you don't want your casing soil to be nutritious, but jiffy mix is fine.It does not have any nutrients.Extra Nutrients cause contamination.

Psilocyber,Alot of people bake their casing layer. Thats how I found out about it. It's in a few teks and I've read a few posts on here where people have suggested the degrees and time. Some say 150 for an hour, others say 450 for 15-20 minutes. How would I do it in a pressure cooker though? What would I put my casing in to put it in the pressure cooker? Another question, The Lizard said he don't even sterlize his casing, he just takes it straight out of the bag and mixes it with colonized substrate and he's done, but everywhere you read you see how casing is suppose to be the easiest to get contamination and you need to make sure everything is sterile. Do I need to even sterlize it. Just for educational purposes only, HOW DOES EVERYONE HERE PREPARE THEIR CASING (Sterlizing wise)?

I think you really only need to worry about sterilizing and contams if you use a nutritious casing mix, liek peat moss and what have you. if its nutritious for the shrooms its nutritious for the contams. at least this is what i think, i really have no idea. i always thought you wanted nutrients in your casing mix nut just moisture. but now for the big question, where the hell did you get jiffy mix from!! I went to 8 stores today and none know what the hell i was talking about. i hear thats pretty good because it is ph balanced? which is good to fight off contams. I was wondering what grade verm did you use, all i can find is the finer grade but i've heard its bad for casings because it causes overlay but screw it thats all i can find thats what i'll use!

Muffin Bear,I had the same problem. Couldn't find Jiffy Mix anywhere. I went to wal-mart a few times and asked the ladies back in the garden center if they had it and she said no, both times, and it was two different ladies. Well, one day I was just blowing time and I stumbled upon in, in the GOD DAMN garden section. It had a little section of its own, not with the verm, peat, and potting soil. The bag it comes in is got small holes (like pencil holes) to keep it airated, makes a hell of a mess in a trunk. But, yes, Walmart has it, but you have to look for it yourself. They seem to hire all the high school drop outs, so its hard to find anyone who knows what they are talking about. As for verm, I use the finer type. I can't find, but have never really looked for, the courser type. If you have Jiffy Mix then thats what you apply to the top part of a casing, and the verm goes on bottom. So really, I don't think it matters if it's the finer grade.

The one guy I asked knew what I was talking about, he took my friend and I in the back (hehe) to the outdoor plants at walmart but all they had were these jiffy cake thingies at Walmart. He said they didnt have the jiffy mix. It was ok because I got to see these two really cool rainbows All the other places said they didn't carry it or know what it was. I did some searches on the board (imagine that) and found most people use the finer grade verm and have good results with no problems. HaHa the funny thing is when they ask you what your going to use the jiffy mix/verm/potting soil/perlite for. "Duhhh...my mom sent me out to get it for flowers" LoL

Forgot to add this in, I've seen some pretty good mixtures of potting soil already including the verm and peat moss plus some other stuff. The only problem is that it contains "time releasing plant food" I'm wonder if this would be bad or good for the shrooms because of the plant food?

Man, that is so true. I went into Walmart the other day to buy a bag of vermiculite (I like the re-sealable bag kind they sell) and it wasn't there. I made the mistake of asking the girl who was working the gardening section if they had any more. I had to explain to her what vermiculite was. I was thinking, "How could you not know what vermiculite is?". Too funny. -snarf
