It's rare-culture co-op time again! Featured species this time is Phlebopus (Boletus) portentosus, a rather large bolete that appears to be saprobic.

It was originally thought to be ectomycorrhizal, but with further study it appears to be able to grow fine without a host. In Australia it is known as the 'Salmon Gum" mushroom, and the largest known specimen found was 64lbs! The study linked on the campaign page gives full detail on how it was cultivated without a host, and the pic below is one of the ones they cultivated.

Help finally get a cultivatable bolete into the hands of our mycommunity, and let the citizen science begin! Who knows, one of us might be able to figure out how mycorrhizal fungi learn to survive without a host.

Do you have the ATCC accession number for the strain you'll be getting?

Aloha has either ordered it this week or are beginning of next week.

In the past I unsuccessfully tried to get fresh specimen of black bolete through a friend who visits Thailand often. So I'm glad you started this

If I understand correct, this purchase will be going through Aloha. What's the point of this?

To purchase cultures from ATCC (American Type Culture Collection) you have to go through a "contracted" lab. They are a quasi-governmental entity, they won't sell cataloged cultures to "civilians". John Holiday and Daniel Tura graciously have helped me out on two co-ops, plus Alan with the P. microspora. We have to cover their cost, plus the shipping to us. Pretty sweet deal really, plus Aloha gets the culture for their library too, as long as ATCC has the culture we're looking for. I'd like to do this a couple or 4 times a year if we get enough buy-ins and cool rare species. I think $20/slant is a fair buy-in price for rare cultures we can't get elsewhere.

I have managed to find a few really interesting Amauroderma cultures through a separate culture bank in Belgium. Might be something interesting for the future.

This is not one of them as far as I know, but check out the blood red flesh of this Amauroderma.

Such as, Pleurotus nebrodensis, Hericium erinaceus, Shiitake, Reishi,
Turkey Tail, Enoki, CoW, Maitake.
I would prefer prints but LC, or Wedges are also fine.

For Trade I currently have a a few syringes of Elm Oyster

Hey I'm not one to normally complain.  But I donated $30 back in March or April for the black reishi and I was never contacted by anyone or received anything.  I would appreciate it if someone could get in touch with me that has black reishi as I am still interested in obtaining this strain.  Thanks !

Don't know.... People in Australia say it's not that great, but in China they've depleted the natural quantity so much they've began cultivating it. Taste is a relative term....

It doesn't occur in North America as far as I know, so it's not like anyone from this continent can go pick some to try it.
