The easiest difference is in the spores, resinaceum will have smooth spores and lucidum will have rough, see my sig. There may be other differences but I have not gotten a sample of G.lucidum sensu stricto to do microscopy on yet.

Also in culture, members of the G.resinaceum clade will produce what are called chlamydospores. Which are asexual spores to aid in propagation. They can be found usually at the tips of hyphae, members of the G.lucidum clade, and many other species such as G.curtisii lack these chlamydospores.

Wow, that's very neat. You fellas seam to be quite well versed on this stuff. I am curious, would one be able to reasonably expect the same medicinal properties from Reishi's other than G. Lucidum? I know that they all hold some of the same benefits. My culture fridge can hardly hold much more, but I want to have the real deal. I am growing these for a specific purpose.

Mr Cloudy can correct me if I'm wrong on this, but G. lucidum I believe also has more of a "lacquer finish" than G. resinaceum.

I just read an article suggesting that many scientists put G. Curtisii, Lucidum, and Oregonense under the same species. They're apparently considered to be different substrains like Penis Envy and EQ's are for cubies, by some mycologists. I'll have to dig that up...

Those "scientists" are flat-out wrong. Simple DNA sequencing proves they are not the same species.

You are correct, G.lucidum tends to have a very high sheen, though not always, and G.resinaceum can sometimes be quite shiny as well.

The DNA clearly distinguishes G.oregonense, G.curtisii and G.lucidum. Here is a tree I built using the ITS sequences that I am currently working with. G.lucidum (red) is at the top, oregonense, (blue) curtisii, (green). And at the bottom is G.sessile (America) in purple, and G.resinaceum (Europe) in pink.

G.oregonense, as you can see is the closest species in this tree to G.lucidum. For the last 100 years though, North American mycologists have been calling G.sessile G.lucidum in error and helping to cause great confusion to the identity of the species. G.curtisii is a distinct species, it can be distinguished from G.lucidum easily by its tan colored flesh with streaks of resinous material. G.lucidum, has a lighter flesh with no resinous streaks.

For comparison here is a phylogenetic tree with Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe cyanescens. The sequences all group nicely together, regardless of strain.

Ganoderma is fairly complicated because there are hundreds of separate species, some of them fairly close together. Some mycologists think that Ganoderma is a relatively young genus and what we are seeing is rapid adaptation and speciation.

I don't know if i mentioned this above, but G.lucidum in most of the medicinal research on the topic is actually G.lingzhi, the species widely grown and cultivated in China. Chinese studies hold Chinese Ganoderma to be higher in medicinal compounds than various other species. So if you are going for the most medicinal, and "authentic" reishi than G.lingzhi is the culture you want. Far too many G.lucidum cultures are not G.lucidum any way... seems to be a very large issue among the mycological community. One that I am working to clarify, 90 percent of the cultures labeled G.lucidum I have received in trades have turned out to be something in the G.resinaceum clade instead.

It took me a while but I finally collected both G.lucidum and G.lingzhi cultures.

Did you decide the F&F G. lucidum was G. lingzhi or G. sichuanense?

I am looking for cultures for medicinal purposes, would you be interested in trading your G. Lucidum and G. Lingzhi? I have a bunch of Reishi cultures right now, and I don't have the experience to differentiate on my own.

I will try to find that article, but you've clearly demonstrated that it is inaccurate information.

Are you aware of whether or not Lucidum and Oregonense can be crossed? Or maybe even Lucidum and Curtisii? I am just curious.

So sad this thread is almost dead. I'm going to awaken it because it's awesome. I was part of the big shiitake buy and lost all the cultures this summer when my fridge died and I couldn't reslant. Long sad story I know but it's time to get things going again. Any of you old hands from the original shiitake buy want to send me a few of the more productive cultures. Preferably warm weather.  Seems most of my close friends are out of the game these days. If you participated in the original group shiitake buy please shoot me a pm and hopefully we can work something out.

I need tropical cultures, ABM, V.v....!!!!

Well things don't always look as they are and things can be misread and mistaken for what they realy are so don't read too much into what I say since I might be mistaken myself. And remember I rarely ever give a definate answer.

I'm working on a new co-op to do as soon as I get the last round of international shipping done from the Black Reishi Co-Op. Getting the logistics worked out, but we're thinking Phlebopus portentosus. I'll update here with a link to the GoFundMe once I get it up.
