need help sgfc humidity problems?

So i am a noob.  Made some mistakes.  I bought a terrium off the internet.  I just dunked and rolled 7 cakes.  I am not sure if i should dithch this hydroponic humidifer with hydroton thing.  Or go to a sgfc. I have 5" of perlite i rinsed and put into my chamber this morning.  Need help.  Not sure how often to mist how often to fan.  Do i neeed a small fan on a closet where my chamber is.  Should i be misting now.  I am worried i am going to lose my cakes.

Loose the humidifier, don't need it, and do not have a fan on it. Watch your cakes, mist directly when needed two to four times a day untill they glisten, fan afterward or don't. :goodluck:

You should just build a proper shotgun fruiting chamber. Holes on all 6 sides, elevate the chamber so there is air flow on the underside of the chamber.

You wouldn't want your chamber in a closet with a fan. SGFCs function best out in the open, with some passive air current in the room, but not a fan directly pointed at it.

You should mist/fan a few times throughout the day. The more the better, as long as you're not drenching or over drying your cakes. Always mist first, then fan. The fanning encourages the evaporation process, which is a major pinning trigger. You can directly mist pins/fruits, but don't leave them soaking wet and drenched.

I have a feeling I bought the same kit as you, or at least from the same company.  Here's my experience with it:

I added a few holes to it, on the opposite side of the air pump/humidifier, because I was very concerned about FAE (quite correctly concerned, and fan whenever I can.  The hydroton humidifier seems to do just fine at keeping the humidity up.

Just finished first flush on 17 cakes, and ended up with a little over 2 ounces dry, so the setup *will* work, and you're not going to ruin the cakes, but 2oz on 17 cakes is a pretty small yield compared to what I've read, so if you have the time to mist and fan 4+ times a day, follow everybody else's advice and just build a SGFC out of it. 

My time constraints don't really allow for that consistently, and my setup works, although not ideally, but I can at least tell you that you're very likely to get at least some mushrooms out of it.

Addendum:

The humidifier plus the perlite seem to do a decent job of keeping humidity up, but my cakes do seem a little on the dry side, so I'm considering starting to mist every time I fan, but that's very unlikely to ever be more than twice a day, and sometimes they'll have to go days without either so I'm not going to ditch the humidifier, and I might actually grab anot her air pump or two just to help out a little with air exchange.

Having said all that, a SGFC following the tek is definitely going to be the best way to go. I just personally can't tend one as frequently as they need to be tended.

Cakes need to be nurtured and taken care of :frown: Misting and fanning only twice a day? And days without it? Not a good idea, an automated humidifier isn't going to help much, but every one who owns one is always fixated on using it so :shrug: I understand people have lives outside of this hobby, but without putting in the necessary effort, you cant expect much out of those cakes. With that said, keep us updated. :popcorn:

I second that, you need to commit to this hobby or it won't reward you. That's just the way it is.

If you truly must leave your grows unattended for days on end, monotubs would suit you well. They are very capable to produce well with minimal handling.

It's very likely that my kit is the same or extremely simular to his, and I know my results aren't optimal, but I have two ounces of proof that it can work.  That's all I'm trying to say.  Not that it's optimal (obviously a SGFC with the requisite attention is optimal), just that he doesn't need to worry about losing the cakes entirely, and that they will produce.

And I've already been pointed towards sclerotia as being likely the best for me given time and schedule weirdness. Pretty excited about trying that, but in the meantime I am successfully growing mushrooms from a kit that clearly does *not* follow current wisdom about the best way.

I have mine in a closet as well, this is pretty clearly not good for air exchange.  The times I do fan I do it vigorously enough to hopefully get fresh air into the entire closet.

Moving them will probably bruise the cakes, but as far as I've been able to figure out that's not really the end of the world.  A SGFC needs airflow for all those holes to make a difference though. Very unlikely to get that in a closet, not to mention the fact that the air probably goes stale relatively quickly

It's likely that I will try a monotub in addition to sclerotia.  Again, in the meantime, what I'm doing is working well enough for me and my closest friends.  :smile:

If you have to leave the SGFC in the closet, I would leave the closet door open and indirectly point a fan towards the  doorway. Teal would be fine, if it's too dense a teal cut a nice big hole in the lid of it and use seran wrap for a clear window for light to enter. Make sure to elevate it a couple of inches. If you're going to leave it unattended just do the best you can. :shrug:

If you have enough room use a dinner plate to scoop under the cakes then transfer to SGFC. If not try to pull tension on both sides of the foil underneath the cakes to lift cakes then transfer. If you have to gently grab them and transfer.

Yeah. I touch my cakes *way* too much (I've had a hard time trying to harvest without picking them up), and they're bruised as fuck, but the ones I dunked for second flush are sprouting like mad, so apparently bruising isn't the end of the world. :smile:

Ok built a proper sgfc.  Can i move my chamber in and out of my closet periodically.  To help with fae.  And light. I transsfered my cakes and perlite to sgfc.  How do i know i have enough water it seems a little dry to me.
