Netgear wireless home networking
    #2195090 - 12/22/03 06:05 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hey folks.

I just got a Netgear 802.11b wireless router and it works great with this SBC DSL (only 1.5mbps). However, I get a lot of lag when using my wireless notebook. The desktop I'm on right now works fine. My notebook gets "Good" to "Excellent" signals from the router so the download transfer rate is superb, but there are times when the lag is unbearable.

So, I bought a Netgear 802.11g 54mpbs and a PC card for the notebook (which will be used in another notebook in the future). Hopefully this will resolve this issue, or make everything smoother.

A wacky thing is, I bought the 802.11b 11mbps router at BestBuy for $50 (after rebates) + tax (which I am going to return), and purchased the 802.11g router and card for $99 (after rebates) at Dell.com!

Anyone have such issues with lag using Netgear? The desktop has a Netgear Ethernet card so I wanted to stay away from Linksys or Microsoft/SMC for compatibility's sake.

One of the things I have noticed with 802.11 is that antenna orientation to the ground plane can have a significant effect on the signal to noise ratio. If you have a weak signal, check that your antennas are properly oriented, orthoganal to the ground plane.

also it depends on how far away your computers/labtops are from the router. The farther you go, the slower it will be.

Yes, signal wise, this is true.
But I always get a bunch of lag-time, wherever I am.... be it 1 foot away from the router or through a few walls across the house!

you can install a firewall - ex. Sygate Personal Firewall - and whenever you sense lag, open it and see what application causes this.

try typing in "netstat" without quotes into the command prompt and see if there are any un-needed connections. If there are, its probably spyware slowing it down.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, but I finally figured out why everything was so slow.

Turns out my Intel Centrino processor was the cause of this. The power management is always set to "maximum battery life" or the lowest setting, so everything was very slow. Now I switched it to "maximum performance" and everything works fine and dandy!

Just a note for all Centrino users.

ping the router.

Is the a bandwidth issue or a ping time issue??? dropping packets or what?
