its funny i have the opposite. im using an old ass shmuv but i get more contams in the sab than that shmuv.

wasn't the old shmuv you were using sitting in a car for a few months. i think you said you smoke cigarettes and it was nasty as shit. i don't know so much about the new models but the old ones work great. they must have reconfigured the out take on those units.

what model did you get by chance? does it still have that built in ionizing unit?

i still use mine to this day for large scale g2g and inoculation of liquids or liquid LI prep.

actually had my first contams this year from SAB-Agar and the culture looked clean. Rest of the tubs were all g2g by shmuv with no contams.

Yeah, mine was all old & fucked up. That's why I tried the new one. It was the same brand, they just changed the housing. It has more holes in it (I guess to save weight and materials) and it just wouldn't seal up right.

This looks like a cool idea.
But why not use a bigger, clear bag?

Do you prefer this to a SAB?
I have a big, clear, thick plastic bag that came with a comforter. I was thinking about doing something similar to this so I can use an air filter.

i use a 55 gallon clear bag. it fits easily 50 quarts for g2g. i use clean fresh bags everytime right out of the box. the lawn bags are slightly opaque.

look for different units that have true type hepas. its possible to find one with a good out take on it.

I'm not sure exactly which one it was, honestly. I know it was black and the only Holmes HEPA-type blower in Wal-Mart for the price.

it didn't look the right shape for what i need it for to be honest.

I think I use the newest model.  Do you buy the TRUE-HEPA rated filter?

The fiter that comes with the one I bought is not HEPA quality. They have a filter you can buy for it that filters down to .3 microns and says on the box that it's certified to filter mold spores.  That's the one I bought and it's been working great for me.

I've never gotten a perfect seal around the filter and it's never caused any problems. I have the highest success rate I've ever had with this tek. I change the bag every 2 - 3 uses and just let it run in between uses to filter the air in my mush-room.

So, in summary, no actual fail in this TEK has been detected, rather a fail in equipment has occurred, therefore this TEK should not be so quickly denounced??

Yeah, I can agree with that. I abused my unit and got a bunch of fail. I bought the wrong model and got a bunch of fail. I feel like if I had used the right shit to begin with and not abused it I'd have had a lot more success.

I'm still going back to a SAB until I can afford a flowhood though. It sucks, it's restrictive, it's hard to see in, I have to work MUCH slower, but I have 100% success and that's the point. I've also scaled down immensely (to 0 actually, but I'm thinking I can pull off 1-2 tubs at a time where I am) so that will make a difference.

Tiger, I always bought the upgraded filter. I think it said True HEPA, but I always went by numbers, and yes it was rated 99.9% at 0.3 microns.

yeah the SAB is very restrictive. but for quick small agar work its a good method. buy a 109 quart tub like mine and flip it. i can fit a good 10 quarts in there with room to work. i flip this one upside down and do the work on the lid. also these ob horse gloves are perfect for full arm length SAB work.

oh wow, so your changing the bag on several uses. i always use a clean bag. even when im doing multiple sessions in one sitting. i guess its overkill.

i am also using a non true type hepa because i bought a 2 pack around 10 years ago. well, im still using the first filter. and my success rate is far higher than my SAB. I get great luck in a SAB but at times I may get a few contams. Whereas, none in the shmuv.

I was actually talking to ham about this one time. i did a session and was g2ging a master jar. It was difficult to see but it had a spot of green mold in it. i accidentally opened up the jar with all my 20 quarts of grain ready to go. Mind you, the grain jars lids were closed. well, I closed the contam jar. Took out all of my quart jars. I then rewiped the surface of the entire Shmuvbox unit. Used a new bag, wiped all my jars off with bleach wipes. I then setup my shmuv again and used another master with those same quart jars.

I did not get any contamination. All tubs grew successfully for a few flushes. So, if you do it right. It is no different than following another tek like SAB work. The methods slightly vary. But its not any more difficult. And yes its a small bit of initial setup to begin with. But the ease of space, the speed of work and the fact that you can do many jars in one sitting, make up for the initial setup procedure.

have you done your tiger drop in the shmuv yet?

I did 8 tiger drops in my SAB. Same routine as always, lost them all. I am blaming the cultivator's technique though, not the method. The first round I did, was perfect.

I don't even use the lid, and I flip it upside down. I just work on some bleach-soaked paper towels. I think mine is actually bigger than 109 qt but I'm not 100% sure of the size.

the only thing restricting the size of your SAB is your imagination!
it doesnt have to be a sterilite brand tote from isle 5 or whatever at wal-mart :super:
