Handling Incubating Jars
    #2188678 - 12/18/03 07:44 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I was wondering if there is any harm in handling incubating jars too much and having them exposed to room light, i examine them every day to check for contams and what not and i was wondering if this will do any harm at all... If it will be harmful what is the max per of time they can be exposed to light without any harm or premature pinning

Someone used to check in quite frequently as well on their jars. This exposed them to light. Didn't make any noticible difference. Didn't initiate any pinning either. The more times you open your incubator to check and handle the jars, the more chance for introduction of contamination.

The very act of checking for contams frequently could lead to them. My bud chacked his jars much as you described at first, but he would liberally spray the area with lysol and expose them for no more than 30 seconds.

As far as light exposure, try to keep it at a minimum as extended periods may lead to premature invitro pinning, and by premature, I mean before full colonization.

just leave them for 2 weeks, check and shake them and leave them a couple more to see if they are fully colonized, be patient and as long as you dont open the jars themselves you'll not have to worry about contams

I handle them plenty, always with a good burst of Oust into the incubator when opened and just before closing. No problems at all.

My friend checks his daily and it never hurts anything, he takes his time to examine them for contams, and only lightly mists the area with some lysol. Hes neevr found it to hurt them at all.
