I think that 60 degrees is a bit too low. You probably can get the mycelium to grow at that temp but it will be REAL slow... like you might not see any growth for 2-3 weeks. But if you do then go for it. I have heard that the ideal incubation temp is 86 deg F... I tend to keep mine at about 75 .. I have also heard that growing the shrooms out in lower temps will cause an increase in potency allthough I have not directly seen this proof through my own experimenting.. I would say be patient and wait. If not then try the shroom gods incubation tech---- Get a plastic box and fill it with water and then put a submersable fish tank heater inside the box with an external temp gague. Then put the jars on top of the box and put a blanket over the jars and box. you should search this board for his tech it has pictures and what not... still I think you will be waiting a long time if you grow at 60 deg F.PEACE

I have found that 80 degrees works the best for rapid growth.

Hi, Yes, 60 degrees is a a bit on the low side. I have jars now growing at that temp and the growth is SLOW!!! I've grown at this temp. many times before. It doesn't hurt anything it just slows things down. If you can, try rasing the temp with your light. Your jars don't need to be in 100% darkness all the time. My jars probably see 12 hours on and 12 hours off. If you just started a casing, then you'd want darkness...but it's not necessary for jars;-)

80 - 85 degrees 12 hours on 12 hours off for the lights once you see mycelum run through the casing. Pretty much like Lana

The optimum temp cubensis is 84 to 86 degrees...above that and below that will result in slower growth. Your intended setup will work fine...just adjust your sprayings and make sure your lights are as far away as possible. The only time you need total darkness is after you have fully colonized your cakes/substrate. So case and place in total darkness. One last note. If the lights are giving out too much heat you could install a light dimmer switch...easy to do...they cost about $3. Good Luck.

put them somewhere in your house where it is warmer like by a heating vent or wrapped in blankets. you could use a heating pad but those usually dry out the jars a lot hope that helps

Ok, just a couple/few more questions, in case anyone is still listening to me...1. I bought a timer that automatically turns my light (the only source of heat) on and off automatically. This means that the temp will drop when the light goes off. The light is only off for an hour at a time. will this be bad for the jars? would it be bad for casing (when that time comes) 2. I think the light is probably drying out the jars a little. do jars need to be at a certain humidity to grow? By the way, I have them in the warmest place in my house already. I just have a really cold house. I can't think of any other way to heat them without using moisture. should i use extra perlite/water to compensate for this when I'm ready to case? Thanks much!

Hmmmm what needs to be understood is that colonizing jars and casing are to a degree...two different worlds. What works for innoculation doesn't mean it will work for casing.Yes your temp will drop. Try a 1/2 hour on 1/2 hour off. I'm not sure....I think it was Shroom Mage on his site...?? Dont' quote me but I think he keeps his lights on for 5 minutes on, 5 minutes off. I like that idea;-) The jars don't really need to be at a certain humidity level, but if your light is hanging an inch or two above your jars, then I'd move it back to about 12". Temp is whats important. And if your lids are tight, not much moisture should be escaping anyway.
