incubation jar moisture buildup
    #382824 - 08/31/01 05:21 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

This is my first time growing Cubensis. I am using the PF Tek with the maximum fruiting substrate formula. My jars have been in incubation for about a week, and the growth has spread to approxamately the area of half-dollars. But there are some small moisture droplets forming between the growth and the side of the jar. PF Tek suggests to loosen the jar lids, but every other Tek (and I've read a lot of them) says never to loosen the lids with uncolonized substrate present. Should I loosen the jar lids, and how much should I loosen them if I do decide to take that route?

Hey, Im no expert, but I would never open a lid till the cake was at least 99% colonized. This is of course this isan exagaguration, but your cakes are still too young, and vulnerable to contams at this stage.
I see big heavy droplets all the time in jars, dont sweat it, (by the by, if the drop touches your cake, it may even turn it blue, so dont think its mold, unless of course it turns green/black.red/ or anyother colour. )

Maybe next time sprinkle a little dry verm on the bottom of the jar before putting substrate in, this will help regulate the moisture a bit, and possibly stop drops from forming.

Its hard to get that exact formula for a sub thats wet enough to spawn, but dry enough not to make puddles. Only experience will give you knowlege.....For now, I say, forgeddaboudit..wait and see.

Leave the jars how they are. If you see the mycelium start to turn a bit yellow, try to turn the jars on their sides to drain a bit of the water. If that doesn't work, loosen the lids a tiny bit (1/4 turn) but don't take them off... Leave the tinfoil and/or tape covering the holes ON.

Thanks Deathcapchick~

I was having the same worry; if you look at my very first post yesterday ( http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11162874) I have pics of 3 of my most successful jars. They are colonizing VERY well it seems, but the water droplets scared me. I will ignore and hope for the best!
