Ganoderma species including formosanum?

Hey lovely community, i went out for a walk in the last 1% of the primary rainforest where i live (tropical) and stumbled upon these fellas for the first time ever. i am really excited and wish to share this with all of you.

temperature about 30-32 degrees celsius, RH about 80-90%. sea level.

first up, i found this gorgeous Ganoderma sp. specimen. Im not sure what species this is, but looks like the lingzhi that has been coming from China. it could be anything really...lucidum clade? growing on live roots.

next up, my very first encounter with this black beauties. was really surprised to see them! growing out from soil...very weird. i did not dig further to investigate. maybe i should have. looks like ganoderma formosanum to me! but correct me if I'm wrong.

i didn't harvest much. left most of them untouched :smile:

as i do not have the gear to clone these guys right now, i would like to extend an invitation towards wildernessjunkie and bigbadwooof, who might be interested in taking on the task of cloning these guys. so if you are reading this, you will be receiving a PM soon! If you guys are not keen, i will call for an open invitation.

in return, i would like to have a plate of the cultures, and for these to be shared openly with anyone who might be interested.

sweet pics!  those that are growing from the ground are pretty cool, bet they were harder to spot with the darker coloration on top.

those ones growing from the ground might be Amauroderma sp :shrug:

Mrcloudy should be along shortly to clear this all up definitively.

i was pretty excited that they could be formosanum, but they are beautiful in any case.

i was not aware of the Amauroderma genus. seems very interesting in terms of medicinal value.

Incredible, where in the world did you find them? Country is all that is needed really.

The bottom one may be Amauroderma, can you cut it in half?

Your red Ganoderma is very likely to be Ganoderma multipileum, given your location, and the multiple branches.

Magoderna vansteeenisii sensu Steyaert.


Description can be found in Species of Ganoderma and related genera mainly of the Bogor and Leiden herbaria. R.L. Steyaert 1972 pg. 114


Description seems to match, with long stem, the color of the context and pore tubes. Microscopy of the spores would be a big help to confirm. Not sure if Magoderma is still a valid name, it is one of the genera formerly lumped in with Amauroderma at one time.

Multipileum is the species growing in tropical Asia that was thought to be G.lucidum, there are others but it is the main one in cultivation, mostly in Thailand and Taiwan and other Southeast Asian locations. In mainland China there is another species, Ganoderma lingzhi, this one was the original Lingzhi (lucidum) and is the widely cultivated species throughout most of China.

Basically if you buy it from Thailand, or Vietnam or another tropical Asian country it is more likely to be G.multipileum, if you buy it from a source in mainland China it is more likely to be G.lingzhi. A cool thing to take note of, G.curtisii which is solely a North  American species is the closest relative to G.lingzhi. At least from all the phylogenetic trees I have seen.


There is probably a whole host of other species being grown locally throughout Aisa, but those are the main two. Ganoderma diversity is very high and increases as you get closer to the tropics.
