The cost of a "real war" would be astronomical indeed, not just monetarily but in lives and resources. Because of the amount of high tech war toys we have now, the cost will be more than any previous war. Basically the only way we could afford a war of that magnitude would be in a total war situation, where every manufacturing and industrious instution is producing for the sole purpose of providing for said war. It's a common misbelief that war is good for the economy, this is only true in a total war situation where everyone is working for supporting the war. So I guess what I'm saying that we'd probably have to be in WWIII to justify that situation. The cost is in lives, resources, and if nukes are used, the possible destruction of human life on this planet.
