Shouldn't raisins attract also potentially dangerous insects?

 Probably so, now that you mention it. Still might try it well away from my garden, just to see...

I reckon this counts as a grow hack.

These are all suckers trimmed off my main tomato plants, and they are fully rooted in about five days of soaking in a cup of water!
Trimming these off promotes bigger, and more tomatoes, which normally they just suck energy from the plant, and rarely bloom themselves.

Instead of throwing them away,or stating more plants from seeds, these will bloom themselves and create whole new plants, which makes things a whole lot faster, and easier:thumbup:

I know most of you all knew this already, but you'd be surprised at the people that don't know about this:lol:

Also this is a lazy mans way to grow peoopers or anyhting else for thta matter.

All I do is,when I'm done eating fruits,I just discard all the seeds throughout my potted plants pots, and pretty soon you'll have all kinds of things sprouting:wink:

Of course I'm moving soon, and I can't do anything with all these plants,so I'm selling them at my yard sale next week for some extra cash:yesnod:

Hey, selling plants at a yard sale can be a hack too!

I was actually going to make a thread about opinions of pinching suckers off tomato plants. I've read both that it can help, but also have read that pinching doesn't really do much to help. This year I am running a side by side test on my plants and pinching one entire row, and my other row will not be pinched of suckers. We'll see what happens!

Let us know how it goes.  I gave up on trying to stop all of the suckers and just focused my time on getting rid of the lowest ones that weren't getting any sunlight or going anywhere.  Takes too much time to sit there all day pinching them off when you have a lot of plants.

I actually don't pinch of all my suckers, just all the ones towards bottom that aren't getting adequate light.

I could see how a person with tons of plants would find this way to time consuming and not worth this practice.

I only have 7 main plants.

I don't see why it wouldn't work with cherry tomatoes....

Oh yea it works for cherries as well. Cherries ime have a tendancy to grow wildly so suckering helps but it will still grow a bit thick "I guess you could say".

Here is the worst kind of "sucker" on a tomato plant.

It's not a Tomato Horn-worm, it's a Tobacco Horn-worm. They look very similar but this is a Tobacco Horn-worm. This guy was over 4 inches long and fat. It was on an heirloom cherry tomato plant.

Ugh, I was plagued by those last year. Any ideas on deterrents for them?

Now that I think of it, I bet those suckers would be GREAT fish bait...

I just panic when I see the loads (pun intended) of worm poop sitting on top of the leaves below it. Then you see the devastation, then the beast itself. They are very well camouflaged, as you can see (another intended pun). I know of no other way to deter them other than spotting them. If someone chimes in with a deterrent, that would be great.

Yes, I know the horror well. I remember the first time I saw one last year I couldn't believe the size!

Most "Grow Hacks" i use have aready been mentioned here.

"Willow water" - This is a very good rooting hormone and can be used same as one use  Clonex or Rhizopon.
Just chop off small pieces of Salix (newly growth) in 1 inch sections and put in a jar with water. Let stand for a few days and you have perfect rooting hormone.

Crushed eggshells - I use some in the soil for my Lophophoras, they seem to like it.

Ladybugs - Great if one have pests. I pick them up whenever i see them outside and put them on my indoor plants.
They go straight to the bugs and start eating.
I keep my windows open a bit so they fly off when full.

Coffe grounds - Seem to be good for plants.
However, DONT use too much or your plants will die. Did happen to me first time i tried it.

Water spray - Just spraying my plants morning and evening with ordinary water keeps most pests away.
Its really a big diffenence since i started doing this.

Nicoitine - Nicontine in the water used to water the plats is said to kill off the small annoying flies.
Where i live we have this snuff with high nicotine content but i guess some cigarette tobacco in the water should work too.

FIM method - When cutting off the top or a branch to promote a plant to grow more "bushy" one can use the FIM method.
FIM stands for "Fuck I Missed" and is to cut off the plant just at a node so that a small part of the node remains.
This generates huge amounts of hormones in the plant and one usually get much more branching to occur when doing this.
Search for it on net if interested.

I probably have more hacks my right now i cant remember any more.

I found 12 praying mantis egg sacks in my yard in the spring while pruning. I put them all around my property to hopefully keep them as spread out as possible. I don't know if they survived the harsh winter but that's a "hack" I do each year to try to ensure that there are plenty of them around.
