Ephedra substitute?

I'm really pissed at this whole ephedra ban. Ephedra was great to use once or twice a week when I needed a little pick-me-up in the morning. certainly wasn't going to kill me, but then again this makes about as much sense as the rest of u.s. drug policy.

so anyway, i was wondering what people might recommend as a substitute for ephedra? What might be a good stimulant herb to replace ephedra with? Would are good stimulant herbs for growing and steeping in tea? Or should I just buy dried herbs at some natural grocery and steep those? I'm slightly hesitant to grow much since I plan on moving in September, but once I settle down I heavily plan on growing some sort of stimulating herb to put in tea.

Recommendations and/or links much appreciated.

For ephedra alkaloids look into the Sida's (Sida Cordifolia among others)
Dried Khat is pretty similar to ephedra, although illegal.
Mate is legal everywhere and its my favorite stimulant, but its not very similar to ephedra.

Is Ephedra the plant banned? Or is it just things containing ephedra for consumption. Cause i'd say just grow a plant. Ephedra sinica.

as i understand it's the latter, it's not gonna be scheduled or anything afaik just banned by the fda for use as a dietary supplement.
