slow colonization
    #2137703 - 11/26/03 12:11 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

A friend is growing 3 jars of rye grain (100/110). This time he is using a heater to really try to keep the temp up in the mid 80s. There is a pic of the terrarium below. However, it seems as though the colonization is going even slower now. After almost 10 days he has a little clump of mycelium in one jar and in the other two jars there's just a couple little white spots, almost nothing. What's the deal? Is it possible having that heater in there's caused too much moisture to escape from the jars somehow or could it be something else? They are definately not too wet.

your jars could be too wet inside, a result of misjudged measurements or contam. Give it a smell in a couple days.

Make sure the jars aren't over 85, too. It looks like your thermometer is on the bottom of the bin, and hot air rises, so it might be hotter above the thermometer....

....just a thought.

like micro said, dont let the temperature inside your incubator go over 84-85, because the substrate temperature (in the jars) will always be a little higher then that, so you want to keep it a little below the optimal substrate temp.

Just be patient and see what happens. If it really goes bad you can always make a new batch with a different water content.
