I don't frequent the OTD much so this may seem like a stupid idea... after reading all this shit about OTD this and OTD that, it seems like one of the big reasons the admins removed it temporarily is because it uses 40% of the database and is mostly just a bunch of bs. What if there was a chat room instead? You could still chat freely about whatever you want but it wouldn't be a big drag on the server....
stupid idea?

One out of 26 forums using 42% of the resources. Pretty significant eh?
But that wasn't the main reason it was closed.. as explained in countless other threads

I guess doubling the data-base load would overcome the greatest of the problems you have presented.
What does this amount to in dollars and sense?

Whoa, and I thought I was wordy  To be honest, your last statement didn't make much sense to me - but if you want me to address it, by all means try to restate it and/or PM me about it.
The resource issue was one of many. Primarily (and this is my opinion), the biggest factor playing a part in the decision to try this was that there is no doubt OTD is the source of the most controversy and drama at our site. It is the forum where people engage in battles and form alliances to gang up on other people. That is not what a community of our like is supposed to be about. In preserving the information relating to the many aspects of fungi - specifically psychedelic fungi - we should be striving to become more tolerant and accepting... working for solutions together and not against each other. Though to some it may seem that the administration is against the OTD forum and its users, this is not our motive. We are against the problems that center around that forum and are looking for a way to help solve them.
So far as dollars and cents is concerned, we were not exceeding our traffic allowances at the time of the closure - but we are attempting to be proactive as this could become a very real concern in the future. While the posts in the OTD forum take up 40-some percent of the total database space, I am quite certain that the traffic generated (eg. so many people loading pages heavy in image content) exceeds fifty percent of our total traffic. Storage disks are a one-time cost, bandwidth is not.

I wont help with bandwidth, but you could delete otd posts a week before they become innactive or something
But I guess you tought about that already

Why not just put a donation button in the OTD people can click on and contribute to bandwidth.

If it were manditory it would be a payment rather than a donation. The idea is that by having a donation button, those who like OTD and feel so inclined can donate. Some will some won't, that is not the issue. The issue is that revenue will still be raised to subsidise the OTD, and that will certainly help the admins to go easier on it. Like a "collection plate" kind of thing.
