I'm Australian; i've never heard that. I have heard the term lemon used though. It's used when referring to 'duds' or things that don't work. Perhaps that's where the saying you're referring to comes from and you've been using a discriminating description without even knowing it.
I've definitely observed that people commonly use sayings without understanding their true meaning. When i was eighteen my English teacher picked me up for saying 'moses well' instead of 'may as well'. I had adopted the bad English from my mum whom had no idea she was incorrectly using a phrase as well.
People pick up on things and use them knowing their meaning without thinking of what they're actually saying.
