new to the scene. looking for some advice.
    #3377831 - 11/18/04 07:25 AM (12 years, 24 days ago)

Hi all. Well, I want to start learning about spirituality and philosophy. My question is, where would you suggest starting? I've been looking through the posts here and most of it is a little over my head. I've read a little by Camus, but that's it. I'm pretty unhappy and desperate. Have been for a long time. I've tried taking some steps to change my life. Joined the army a while back. Thought it would make me stronger and improve my outlook on life. Going through all the training definitely helped me grow but I was more miserable there than ever. I drifted around low paying jobs for a while and got tired of spending my days doing something I hate with no reward other than food in my belly. So I decided to go to college. Maybe getting into that whole party lifestyle you see in movies would be good for me. Haven't really got into that and I'm seeing that the people that are are people I don't like being around. So now I'm planning on going to community college back home to be a paramedic. What I've realized through all this is I need to figure out how to be happy wherever I am and not rely on my environment. Though the summer I spent in Hawaii playing in the ocean was pretty damn cool. I can really identify with the anti-heroes in Fight Club and Choke by Chuck Palahniuck. Seems like all I ever do is read these days. I guess what I'm looking for is a set of beliefs or guiding principles to help steer me in the right direction.

Maybe this doesn't belong here and I should start a livejournal for it. heh. So do you guys have any advice? Suggested reading material?

""Maybe this doesn't belong here and I should start a livejournal for it. heh. So do you guys have any advice? Suggested reading material?""
might advice some posibilities?

""My question is, where would you suggest starting?""
start where you start.

""I'm pretty unhappy and desperate.""
who and what is pretty unhappy and desperate where and how?

""I've tried taking some steps to change my life""
then take some steps instead of trying?

""Thought it would make me stronger and improve my outlook on life.""
dont 'thought' it, act it??

""no reward other than food in my belly""
one do not get a reward, one feel rewarded?

""Maybe getting into that whole party lifestyle you see in movies would be good for me.""
isn't that just in the movies? like, life is not a movie?

""What I've realized through all this is I need to figure out how to be happy wherever I am and not rely on my environment.""
what if you already got figured out how to be happy all the time, then you wont need to figure it out, just focus on it?

""I guess what I'm looking for is a set of beliefs or guiding principles to help steer me in the right direction.""

join the club? find a axiom

sub note: can an axiom be an axiom?

Id highly reccomend Cosmic Trigger by Robert Anton Wilson. If you dont read the book at least remember the most important line from the book "Don't Believe Anything"

Maybe the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle would also be a good for read for you.

Try and have faith that all will be cool but at the same time have no faith at all.

Peace and good luck!

Hey cool, welcome !
My tip, check you from inside (you said rightly, that happiness doesn't com from outside). So, listen to your heart and mind.
What about some easy meditation ? That helps getting a glimpse on your spiritual 'outfit',
To hold it simple, my tip goes to the roots of buddha: samatha and vipassana. No esoteric bullshit, very profound buddhistic rules to calm your mind, clear your thoughts and sharpen your sight.
If you know the basics, you then can be your own teacher. Your assistent teacher will be nature by itself.
Just a tip...
Good luck !

My question is, where would you suggest starting?-

with an open mind.

"I've been looking through the posts here and most of it is a little over my head."

mine too.

"I'm... unhappy and desperate."

That's generally where the spiritual pursuit originates, in disatisfaction.

"I was more miserable there than ever."

sometimes it gets worse i.e shamanic experience

"Maybe getting into that whole party lifestyle you see in movies would be good for me."

Yeah I think so, maybe that IS the answer.

"Haven't really got into that and I'm seeing that the people that are are people I don't like being around."

isolational tendencies...anti-social?

"So now I'm planning on going to community college back home to be a paramedic."

When I got out of the army they asked me if I wanted to fly medivac in miami and I said no I didn't want to see all that, there's a high suicide rate amongst paramedics or so I'm told.

"What I've realized through all this is I need to figure out how to be happy wherever I am"

Good trick, I wish I knew

" Though the summer I spent in Hawaii playing in the ocean was pretty damn cool."

Yeah but doing it all the time would get pretty damn boring wouldn't it

" Seems like all I ever do is read these days."

I used to read alot of sci-fi but I'm more into biographies now

" I guess what I'm looking for is a set of beliefs or guiding principles to help steer me in the right direction."

Go to any church and they'll steer you into what they think is the best direction for you; try to see thru those who only want your wallet.

"Maybe this doesn't belong here and I should start a livejournal for it."

Living journals are great; Years down the line you can look back at where you were and maybe even contribute to your own auto-biography; certainly worthwhile.

I would start with Plato. Some of his dialogs are better than others. You will find that he addresses all the major philosophical problems.

The Republic is long and a bit nonsensical in parts so I would not suggest reading the whole thing at first. First read the allegory of the cave; I believe it is in book seven of the Republic.

Some people have said that all of philosophy is a footnote to Plato. You can probably find the Republic and allegory of the cave online.

Some people think its a story about a mushroom trip.
