Quick idea on how to keep temp when pastuerizing straw
    #2084669 -

If anyone's already posted this then sorry.

Check it out; instead of getting a therm to keep core of straw at a stable 170F, one could preheat oven to 170, bring water to a near boil, add straw to hot water, and then remove pot from stove and place in preheated oven at 170F for 1 hour.

What do you think??

yeah but you wouldn't want to put the straw in near-boiling water.

i think if you just put a pot of water and pillowcased straw in an oven that's set at around 160-170 (calibrated) for 2 hours, that would work.

Just put that shit in a baking bag in the oven at low setting for 2 hrs,you can put any verm in your micro if you are going to add that to your casing

what I mean is add the straw to the hot(170F)water like you would normally, however instead of keeping it on the stove and monitoring the thermometer every few minutes, you could throw the whole setup in the preheated oven for 2 hours and come back then. That'll pretty much assure the proper temp for the right amount of time, no?
-seems easier to me than waiting around the stove with a thermometer in the poo/straw constantly adjusting a tiny flame...

If you're using an oven to pasteurize, you might as well do it all in an oven bag. You can run cool water over the straw ahead of time and let it drip a bit so you get the right amount of moisture, then load it into the oven bag and cook. There's a tek under advanced/bulk substrates here at the shroomery detailing this.

there also a good idea about using two tubberwares inside each other to maintain temps of boiling water before adding soaking straw and water . NOt sure where the exact tek is. You could search around for it.

The temperature dials on most ovens are very inaccurate at those low temperatures, but if you tested the oven to make sure it's stable at those temps first, then I don't see why it wouldn't work fine.

Supercollider and thisone have some great ideas. Will definitely check this out.

Demiurge, I wasn't aware of this...i.e. how innacurate ovens can be at low temps. Me thinks I will invest in an oven therm anyway-regardless of which tek I use.

Thanks guys. Anyone else have an idea before I take the plunge?
