Hypothetical Casing Question
    #2087870 -

Allright, this relates to the recent post I put up entitled "Nutrients for Mushrooms." I don't know whether or not this would work, but I was just brainstorming because I was bored the other day. Please let me know what you think.

Say you have a casing you are ready to fruit. One of the biggest problems (or less of a problem rather than inevitability) is the fact that casings will eventually dry out and stop producing mushrooms. Say the casing was in an aluminum baking pan as well. What if you were to fill another baking pan with liquid that was either drained from poo or some sort of mushroom Miracle Grow (which ties into the previous thread of trying to find out what nutrients exactly mushrooms thrive on). If you poked holes in the bottom of the casing and then placed it into the pan of nutrient enriched water, would the casing now have access to a greater network of nutrients thus extending the life of the casing and maybe attributing to bigger flushes?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know. Most of us don't post fiction responses or questions. I've never tried it. Why not be the entrepreneur and give it a shot. Good luck.

I just wanted the opinions of those who were experienced with the cultivation of mushrooms. Since I'm pretty new I just wanted to throw it out there.

Sorry I've been drinking. I'm getting lippy. I find myself giving everybody a hard time in every forum. My bad brother. But no I haven't tried it. I haven't seen anything about it, and I read most of which goes on here. For sport of course.

i reckon you'd probably get contams as the mycelium would be old and not able to fight of germs as well as a fresh cake.give it a go,i'd love you to prove me wrong :smirk:

I'm talking about doing this right from the beginning though, so the mycelium network would have access to the nutrients from the very beginning.

i think i read a tek about using poo water instead of spring water for the brf tek somewhere before.i was thinking the same thing the other night after cooking shit for two hours and ending up with a dark thick drink that looked like soya sauce.
i think you would have to pc it and that would kill the nutrients in the poo water anyway.
i'm sure someone around here would have tried it.
go on risk a cake and let us know

I plan to.

And I also remember the heated argument here about "hydroponic" mushrooms...but this could be a step towards that, no?

Some people like to dunk their casings in water after each flush to rehydrate, but I've never heard of anyone doing it before the first flush. There is no reason to dunk a freshly colonized casing. It is already full of moisture and nutrients.

If you do plan to dunk, it wouldn't be a good idea to put nutrients in the dunk water. It might work, but it's such a contam risk that IMOA it wouldn't be worth it. Leaving the casing sitting in nutrient rich water is an even worse idea. That is just asking for contams, and a casing that is overly saturated won't even fruit very well.

A few quart jars of cased wbs will give you several ounces of mushrooms and will sometimes keep fruiting for over a month. I feel it's more of a problem that casings keep fruiting for so long, than not long enough. After 3 flushes you're wanting to clear out the space for your next project, but you don't want to throw away a good casing. If you really need that many mushrooms, then just go bulk. One good straw/dung grow will produce more mushrooms than you'll know what to do with.

This is neither a problem nor an inevitability.
That?s what misting the casing with water is for.
