Quick Casing Question
    #314039 - 05/10/01 01:57 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

What is better, to cover your fruiting container with Saran Wrap or foil, poke holes and place on perlite

OR

Do not cover fruiting container and just place fruiting container on perlite.

If container is covered, when is the foil/wrap removed?
Thanks for any help!

Peace

The three stages of casing maintenance...
1. First of all, while a casing incubates, they will be fine a terrerium, covered with saran wrap. For incubation, high humidity and little air exchange is desirable.
2. The next phase after the casing is colonized is pin initiation. During this stage, the casing needs light, fresh air, and high humidity. The higher the humidity, the higher the need for fresh air, and also the higher the risks of contaminates. But conversely (and likely a source of disagreement amongst teks) High humidity is absolutely neccesary at this point to achieve an optimum pin set (more pins/ more evenness of pin set=more shrooms). 95%-100% humidity is the goal for this stage. Most people probably don't regulate to higher than the 85% humidity required of the next stage for their pin initiation. They get results, but they rarely get the wall to wall pins that a propper pin set should produce) As soon as you seen pins, you move on the the next stage.
3. The next stage is fruitbody developement. At this stage you need lower humidity. 85% seems to be ideal, but never higher than 90%. Higher humidity increases the chances of contams, while diminishing the productiveness of the casing. You see, you need to have evaporation off of the casings surface, to pump water/nutrients into the shrooms via capilary action.
