Quick casing question.

I've had my casings sitting in my terrarium for about a week now and theres no mycelium growth.. what should I do? Both EQ and B+ strains. 91% humidity, 75 degrees and constant air exchange. Its just a straight verm casing.
Off Topic: I dried a shroom thats about 1.5 g dried.. but i didnt dry it the best i could.. now the center of the stem is turning blue and dark.. lets say someone accidently ate it.. would it be ok or would they get sick?

You might want to bring the temp. up to 82-84F. What did you case with?, and how thick is the casing layer?

Straight verm casing. 1/2 inch of casing, then myc, then casing. 1/2 inch of all. I've read that cold shocking does nothing for cubes? The cakes are very humid. when i lift the tinfoil on top of them to look at them theres water droplets on the tinfoil.

your casing layer is a little on the thick side- HQ usually uses only about 1/4" with the much airy-er coir. btw, you dont want air exchange- you wnat a co2 buildup (but i see you have a foil covering, so it doesnt really matter...) ive read that straight verm is a little on the slow side- you may just want to take the wait and see approach. id also up the temps as well-this should speed colonization (but watch you dont dry out the casing layer or bake the entire casing!) :)

Why do you have tin foil? The casing needs light!!! Raising temp may help, but it seems that lack of light is your problem.
oscill8,
Why the hell wouldn't you want fresh air? I think you're wrong here dude.

thanx for the reply :) i hope to be getting a lizard aquarium heater this weekend.. what about my dried mushroom question? im not sure if the blueing/darkening means its decaying or its just bruised?

sorry bull, either youre wrong or stamets is wrong. hes got NO mycelial growth on the casing layer. which means hes in the pre-primordia stage. colonizing the casing layer requires:
90%+ rh
84-86 F
co2 buildup (5000-10000ppm)
ZERO air exchange
and incubation in total darkness.
(TMC p 198).
once hes achieved colonization of the casing layer (30-70%, depending on personal preference and vigor of the strain), THEN the casing layer needs light and fresh air exchange (which are signals for primordia to form and pinning to occur, along with a dropping of the temps). your way- the casing is triggered into pinning before an adequate pinset is formed and before the crumbled substrate has had a chance to fully recover and form new mycelial networks- making the casing less productive (if even at all) compared to someone whos followed proper casing procedures.
and dont call me "dude" like you know me or something.

if i don't cover early mycelium poking through to get more uniform colonization of the top layer will i get pins too early even if i don't expose it to light?

you may get an uneven pinset or overlay.
cubes dont need light to produce fruitbodies. they only need light to show which way is ^up^ .

OK, Lot's of attitude here.
Guess why it's a "forum"
No I don't know you OSK-dude! Don't wanta swap spit with you either.
I don't use books to grow shrooms, a-hole.I don't have gages or Co2 meters.Don't need 'em. I have grown more shrooms by accident than you've TRIED to grow.
If you were so smart you would have questioned the FOIL?
Who uses tin foil? Does Mr. Stamets?

all we're here to do is swap information. and yours was misinformed in trying to "correct" me.
if you read my 1st post, i said the air exchange in the surrounding terrarium doesnt matter SINCE his casings were covered in foil (a common practice in cultivation and casing procedures). since you havent read anything i wont quote books anymore, but you can do a quick search thru the threads here and see what others do for casing. foil, saran wrap, lids for plastic tubs- they all work as they prevent air exchange and promote co2 buildup during the colonization of the casing layer.
im also not in a pissing contest about whos done what. heres what happens when proper casing procedures are followed:
even pinset.
