I think my bulk substrate has Bacillus..danger involved?
    #2048656 - 10/27/03 10:46 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I believe I accidentally sterilized my straw and poo and after 1 day since spawn and incubating at 83 deg, the rubbermaid is emmiting a foul, strong smell. After researching TMC, I identified it as Bacillus I think. The crumbled cakes are going nuts and colonizing the substrate very well, but the damn smell is still there. Can the mycelium overun the bacteria? Are there and ill effects of just letting it sit and watching?

See how things go, if the smell gets much worse I would give up, and
even if the mycelium outcompetes the bacteria, you can still get wet spots of bacteria lurking in the bottom of the casing.

But it sounds like you didn't sterilize it as the bacteria
showed up pretty quick, what were your methods?

I put the straw and poo in pillowcases and put on the stovetop for 60-70 minutes...didnt boil, just let it steep in the steaming water for that time...after cooling I crumbled 2 cakes (after removing some uncolonized substrate) and mixed together. after 4 days, the smell is not as strong. I am just concerned that breathing this stuff can be bad for you. I dont stick my head in a huff, I can smell it with the lid still on..but like I said, the smell id getting lighter and the mycelium is taking off...the poo is a tad wet and wasnt broken up that well, but the straw is nice...

Since Bacillus is a bacteria, I wouldnt think I could get sick from just cautiously smelling it...I will see what happens.

Just found this on the net...

"Bacillus represents a genus of Gram-positive bacteria which are ubiquitous in nature (soil, water, and airborne dust). Some species are natural flora in the human intestines. When grown on blood agar, Bacillus produces large, spreading, gray-white colonies with irregular margins. A unique characteristic of this bacterium is its ability to produce endospores when environmental conditions are stressful. The only other known spore-producing bacterium is Clostridium. Although most species of Bacillus are harmless saprophytes, two species are considered medically significant: B.anthracis and B. cereus."

So unless I have the anthrax type, I should be good to let it go and see what happens..I doubt I will consume any of the fruits, unless I know for sure I wont get sick.

> I doubt I will consume any of the fruits

I have never gotten anything to fruit once it became infected with Bacillus. The bacteria is very aggressive and reduces substrate to mush in little time. I would assume fruit would die the same quick death.

> I know for sure I wont get sick.

Assuming that you have bacillus, nothing else, and are not allergic.

I went ahead and tossed the whole rubbermaid...there was no doubt that my bulk was contaminated...no visible contamination, but the smell was just too foul...when in doubt throw it out!
