terrible smell from 1 day old bulk substrate...WTF?
    #2043164 - 10/26/03 12:39 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I just mixed together my store boguht poo, straw, and 2 colonized cakes...a day after there is a horrible smell coming from the rubbermaid. There is no sign of discoloration or contaimination, but the smell is overwhelming. I pasturized the straw and poo on the stove top for 70 minutes, let cool, and then crumbled the cakes and mixed together...the cakes were fine, the straw and poo smelled normal..but as soon as they were mixed together and put to incubate (83 deg) a day later that smell came...should I worry? Is one day soon enough for a contaminate to produce such a strong odor?

If it doesn't smell earthy...it's contamed.

But if I were you, I would still let it sit and see what happens.

I was reading in Staments TMC, that the possible contam could be Bacillus or "sour rot" or "wet spot" bacteria. The bulk substrate is wet and not mixed very well. Apparently, Bacillus is one of the fastest spreading bacteria and can reach numbers in the trillions in 14 hours. However, there are none of the "dull gray" or "mucus-like" signs that should accompany a Bacillus infestation. The book also goes on to say that the strong foul odor smells like "rotten apples" or "burnt bacon" which is right on par with what I smell. I have another question, is it possible that the smell is also the smell of carbon dioxide being emmtied from the substrate? It is a stretch, but I want to save my Hawaiians! I might just throw it all out, since some of the bacteria can be harmful to humans.

It sounds to me like you accidently sterilized your bulk substrate.

You are probably right. Sterilization kills off the "good" bacteria in the straw and poo if I remenber right. If I continued to let it grow to see what happens, could it be detrimental to my health at all?
