what penalty?

the hypothetical one that doesn't exist?

there is no penalty. you committed no offense. like i said, consider it recompense, and be done with it. otherwise, you're simply not being candid. explain then how you're to be rocked so by giving a little monetary recompense to a whole people? in the whim, we give things away, but someone asks of you something, though because of what your grandfather did, you wouldn't give it to them? the miserable change in your pocket?

Can't sum up an entire continent full of several hundred tribes, cultures and military superpowers and sum them all up as either "Savage" or "Peaceful". It's just silly, really damn silly. Even after the beginning of European colonization of both American continents, we are still talking about OVER 500 years of evolving war technology, cultural assimilation, yada yada yada. Anywhere from 10 million to 70 million people by any range of estimates across an enormous piece of land covering over a third of the planet.

Were the Native Americans savages? Sure, all humans are if you want to sum them all up in one group. It's damn silly man, so damn silly.

My guess is that there was little reason for war.

Obviously, war happened. Humans are humans, and they will act accordingly. But were the Natives actively violent and war mongering?

in north and central america the indigenous people were brutal in war and
even in times of peace, they were also peaceful. in reality they were like
anyone else, they waged war and then made peace, sometimes treaties were
broken and war continued. when one nation overtrew another it was common
for them to take slaves and often times those slaves would end up as
decoys on a battle field, this was even done by the peaceful nations such
as the cherokee

in central america I think it's pretty well known that human sacrifice was
also common, that tends to be fairly brutal as well but something that's
not as well known is that some nations of indian along the gulf coast in
what's now texas an into missisissipi were also cannibals. and they even
hunted the mastodon and a number of other species to extinction

yeah, imagine that, the stuff the history books dont tell you

so to answer the question, they were like every other human

Thank you lol. This was the most accurate post of all

I enjoyed reading your guys' posts. I was afraid it would turn into a discussion about genocide etc

But I have been sick the past couple days and didn't keep up with this thread

One of the posters mentioned the inca. I read quite a lot about the Inca. They were fairly advanced so I understand it. Amazing government system, and werent too violent. This is all from memory of books I read 5 years ago when I went through a phase of reading about them. But they come off overall as fairly chill

But on my own research, and some of the on-topic posters as well as logic, this is what I have deduced:
It is silly to try and generalize any population with vague adjectives. The reality of what the Native Americans were like in precolumbian times is much more complex than that. It is silly to douse ourselves in the false revisionist theory that they were all tree-hugging hippies who listened to reggae and smoked herb. They fought for resources and killed people just like the europeans. There were peace treaties, and betrayals. Over the course of 10,000 years, 1/3 of hte earth's landmass, there a lot that happened, and little we know about. Just like any group of humans, they fought wars when nessacary
However, I would like to add that I read an interesting piece in my history class a couple of months ago. It discussed how human sacrifice in central america was due to the drought and famine at the time which led to a social disarray. This is what turned the time period that the aztecs established in a violent time period. I just thought that I would add that in. Using my own personal logic, I feel that if there were peaceful times, it would be due to the low density population across the contient. I cant emphzise this enough. 100 million people across a huge contient. Also, we shouldn't shy away from the fact that there are gruesome parts of every culture. Chinese have foot-binding. Indains have the caste-system. Muslims have terrorism. But at the same time, it is silly to try and take one negative aspect and apply it to the whole culture. Some tribes were savage, and others were peaceful. They were just like europeans. A group of people trying to get by in a dog-eat dog world

So I hope that conclusion is accurate and neutral enough for everyone to agree on^

if i recall, the inca were mostly dead from disease when pizarro got there too. maybe that's why i was under the impression that they were peaceful because there was nobody there to really put up a fight.

Plz read my most recent post. The inca were pretty advanced, and their government system wasn't very oppresive if I remember correctly

If you could please provide sources or links or books for those facts that would be great

Not that I dont believe you. I just like to go the extra mile and understand both sides of the conversation. We also rarely hear these things in history class

Of course it is. Taking from one (or many) to settle what you perceive as the injustice of another, is exactly that.

It's unlikely to happen and it shouldn't.

It's a well accepted idea

No different than the Isreali's paying reparations, collectively.

It's not collective punishment, it's righting a wrong you as a group of people committed. This kind of thing is done all over the developed world. We still do it today in America with some native groups.

I honestly don't see the fairness in that.

Why should I pay you because of what my great-great-grandfather did to yours? (theoretically speaking)

It's no different than taxing the rich to pay for the poor's needs.

No one calls that collective punishment, just taxation.

i already did. there is no punishment and you aren't being treated as a criminal. they're asking for a bit of pittance from you. it's hardly outrageous, you chose to see it that way.

Obviously, they weren't savage at all since we did steal their land away from them.. most tribes arnt savage at all.

They don't destroy the world like we do, yea they may kill animals for food or whatever but they live in harmony with their surroundings and their planet, unlike us.... and their called primitive.... the people are destroying the planet are the primitive ones.
