Sharing thoughts over space and time
    #2024924 -

This article today made me reflect on the sad state of written and verbal communication these days.
The article itself is a little pedantic, and certain specific instances might be less relevant outside the UK, but the general point remains worthwhile.
Think about this instance - the author asserts (no details given) that it has been suggested that students be allowed to use text messaging abbreviations in exams. Am I the only one here who thinks this would be awful? Shouldn't we be expected to pay attention to what we write, to use actual words, when communicating?
I am posting this here because I think this forum is one in which attention to language should be higher than in some of the other forums. If we want to be discussing Spirituality and Philosophy, subjects usually dealing with abstractions and complex ideas, shouldn't we make sure to use clear language so that our posts may be better understood? It's not about rules, it's about communicating. The rules of language and the particular definitions of words allow us to express more ideas, not less.
And language is still a major factor in how we think about the world. It's what gives us the ability to conceptualize, to share thoughts like no other being on the planet. Terrance McKenna described the wonder of it once like this: "(roughly remembered as) one ape makes some throat noises that vibrate across space and elsewhere and another ape downloads this as some sort of intelligible information."
I understand that for some of us posting here English is a second language. A lot of posts here are well put, but sometimes there are posts that I read and I just can't make any sense of what was written and I can't even find an actual complete sentence

From The Article:

Quote:
It is an outrage that the phrase "human resources" was not strangled at birth. I hate it for its ugliness and its sloppiness. A moment's thought tells you that "resources" are exploited, used up, squeezed for every last drop of value and then replaced. Are we really meant to regard human beings in that light? It seems we are.

That is the best part of the whole article.

Oh, it was on-topic, man. Very relevant, as well.

Just sort of hinting at the fact that people put so much stock in words, but the fact is, there are so many different words in so many languages that mean the same thing, that like yeah. Anyways...

anyone know what I fucking said?
Peace.

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

My point is, the shared language we are using requires attention, and throwing words which no one else understands around doesn't make much of a point, especially if you need another post to explain your first one.
