ID Request: Possible Liberty Caps?
    #2017911 - 10/17/03 12:46 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, I found these mushrooms growing in a large area of alder woodships and rotting logs.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I find those all the time cody. They are not active, and you find them all over woodchip areas. Their caps turn into ink and melt away. Liberty Caps are found in grassy areas like meadows.

yeah man I hate those mushrooms. They took over haft my cyan patch last year. Liberty caps grow in pastures and fertilized lawns, if your in woodchip habitats than look for cyans and baeos

No offense, but they look absolutely nothing like Liberty Caps. Not to mention that the habitat is completely wrong. There are tons of pictures and lots of info about Libs out there for you to check out.

Thanks guys! I didnt see any baeos or cyans in this patch, unfortunately. I'll keep looking though!

ken, I checked out part of that field you pointed out and I found a shitload of amanitas, but nothing else really. I didnt have time to look that hard though, I'm going back later today to check it out more thoroughly. Peace!

Those are Coprinus. They look similar to Coprinus lagopus. Accurate identification to species would require a microscope.

Not active, not edible, probably not poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!
