Political Comentary in Children's Cartoons
    #2010894 - 10/15/03 06:51 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Many cartoons, marketed for both children and adults, include political comentary. Usually, the cartoons for adults are blatant (South Park), while the kid's 'toons are much more subtle. I observed one such scene on the early morning cartoon 'Tex Avery'.

The scene began like so many others staring a Good Cowboy (dressed in white) and an Evil Cowboy (dressed in black), having an exagerated gunfight in a mine. Hiding behind barrels to keep from getting shot, the Evil Cowboy had an idea (a lightbulb appeared above his head). Pulling out an American Flag, the Evil Cowboy begain to sing 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. Being the patriotic, proud American he is, the Good Cowboy could not resist emerging from his cover location to hold his white cowboy hat in front of his chest and sing along to the national anthem. At which point the Evil Cowboy shot him.

Of course, the Good Cowboy was only minimally injured, with his clothes being turned to ash and his skin slightly darkend, but this short scene depicts a very real and very important message. Flag waving can be used as a weapon against us. The idea of patriotism can lull us in to a false sense of security and lure us into the open. And that is when Evil attacks.

What do you think?

I think a little less thinking is in order.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

I normally can't stand Tex Avery, but I would like to see that one.

Is Tex even still alive?

I think that is a fantastic observation. On the flip side of that, you should try watching Schoolhouse rock.
