Amanita Muscaria?
    #1997330 - 10/10/03 03:21 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Hi, I found several of mushrooms that I think are the South African Muscaria Mushrooms. Here is a pic of the cap. Is it an edible non-poisonus mushroom?

The warts on the cap surface indicate that you have an Amanita. To identify it to species we need to see the underside of the cap, and the stem (especially the base of the stem and volva).

Given the universal veil type, it is very unlikely that that mushroom is edible. It is very probably poisonous, probalby containing ibotenic acid and muscimol toxins.

To things need to be considered. First, your location says you're in Pennsylvania, but you think you've found a South African mushroom. Is the mushroom from the US or South Africa? Second, if the mushroom is from Africa, I (and probably nobody here) have little experience identifying mushrooms from that continent. Information from a person on one continent about mushrooms from a different continent should be considered suspect, unless the person is known to be an authority on those mushrooms.

If your mushroom is from the US, there are many Amanita species with yellowish caps. The edibility/toxicity of most of those species is unknown.

While almost all fatal poisonings by Amanitas involve amatoxins, other Amanitas have caused fatalities, some by unknown toxins. An excellent example is Amanita smithiana. Experimenting with eating unknown Amanitas is not advised.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the reply. This Amanita is from the SouthWest Pennsylvania area and It is in the US. I said it looked like a south african strain because that is what it seemed like the pictures matched up to. Here is also 2 more pics of the stems and gills. Also, could it be the "var. formosa" strain? I saw effed's thread about his amanita var. formosa strain and that seems to link up to the mushroom cap i found. Before I forget, it has white spores. So far, I have found 3 of them....nice sized too (10 - 15 g dried). here are the pics as requested.

dont trust matching up pictures.
its the formosa variety of aminita muscaria, feel free to experiment with it in moderation, but dont be too dissaponted when you vomit and feel little if anything desireable

Is it possible at all that I could get poisoned from experimenting with it?

yes, in some cases, particularly with overly high dosages. read the faq entries on the fly agaric.

Why would u want to experiment with it anyways..you know its not psychoactive...So even if it was'nt poinonous (which I think we've concluded it is) what benefits would you obtain from sampling a bite?

Just as a note... I probably wouldn't try any strain Amanita muscaria if you paid me. Too many people have *horrible* experinces with it. Given that the cap is 100% yellow and doesn't fade to a darker color in the center, I would definately NOT eat that mushroom. It will most likely cause you to get very sick or die. Not my defintion of fun.

yeah; what it is not is psychadellic.
it is not suitable for recreational use by and large [ a point Mithcnast and i actualy seem to agree on on the subject ].

I think the others have covered it, but I'll just chime in and confirm that that mushroom is definitely Amanita muscaria. Currently, Rod Tulloss says that it should be called variety guessowii, not formosa, but it's the same mushroom US authors refer to as formosa.

Here in Colorado that species causes more visits to emergency rooms than any other mushroom. Number two is Amanita pantherina and number three is Chlorophyllum molybdites.

If you decide to try it, make sure you try it with very low doses at first. That way you won't get as sick.

Happy mushrooming!
