Hi,
I can find heaps of Amanitas but the mass of conflicting information out there is so confusing. Some places or people swear that they're deadly and won't even touch one, and then I hear of others buying them to eat! Are all the toadstoals with red caps and white warts amanitas? Why would anyone eat something nicknamed DeathCap!? What am I missing here? Someone please fill me in.

I have found the best way to smoke a Marlboro is right out of the package, but there is no way to tell if any particular kind of Amanita is poisonous or not, even Mjshroomer once told me he is never really sure about anything, that is why I have Mj's picture up on my wall at home is because he is my idol. I don't offer him things and I don't bow to my idol, and I don't do anything weird, he is just my idol.

Hi wombat!
Amanita Muscaria isn't nicknamed the Death Cap... that's Amanita Phalloides, which is a greeny/yellowy capped mushroom. I am sure Phalloides does occur in Australia, but it's fairly uncommon. In any case you won't ever confuse the two. The comman name for Muscaria is Fly Agaric. The red Fly Agaric is a very distinctive shroom, nothing else looks much like it. The Amanita pages here and at Erowid should help you decide whether you want to try eating these things or not... they seem to vary a great deal in potency, alot of people report the experience to be uninteresting or unpleasant. But some people like em.. so you won't find out for yourself until you try!
