Honestly, it is obscene. Now, if everyone in the world looked like a model on the other hand...

I just made a new thread about this topic, because this has been bothering me for quite some  time. I recently started going to a new gym, they have a steam sauna and jacuzzi in the women's and men's locker rooms. The locker rooms are separated by gender. Yet, the gym has this really stupid rule that it is MANDATORY to wear a swimsuit while in the sauna. WHY?!?!?! We are all the same gender in there.

because of the health department, they set the rules regarding public saunas
and shit. speaking of shit, that's why they set those rules, would you want
some guy that hasnt bathed in a week and cant wipe his own ass gawking at
you in a sauna and leaving skid marks all over the seating? now since it's
not a coed sauna, I know I wouldnt want to deal with that, nor would I
want to be seated in the same spot that guy had previously occupied

the separate sex sauna is for the protection of clients, the clothing is
there for the same reason but health related

You've never been to a sauna have you? People go in naked but they sit on a towel, or the towel is wrapped around their waist. Especially women should do that, since if they sit on a damp surface their vagina can easily pick up bacteria and stuff.

There are no "health department codes" for nudity in sauna's, as a matter of fact, the ethnic spa's that I go to where everybody is naked are in America. Health code standards for sauna has more to do with quality and chemicals that are in water and things like that, not regulating nudity.

Re: American Culture Has a Warped View on Nudity [Re: Crystal G]

I have always been very comfortable being nude; I think all of my close friends and family have seen me naked.  I was raised in a very Skandanavian area of the US and there was no issue in my mother or grandmother bringing my sister or I into the ladies locker room full of naked adult women.  When I reside in the rural area of the Midwest where I tend to hang out in summer it is full of mountainous streams and creek beds.  Nothing more refreshing than jumping in the lake or playing in a cool stream in complete nature (nude).  When I had my cabin in the ozarks I was almost always naked, weather permitting.  My friends knew this and some were offended.  One of my favorite things is nude gardening.
I think men are especially shy due to our culture of "bigger is better".  Most adult males do not even know what a normal adult male penis looks like.  You girls have it easier in this carat org for sure.
We have the whole being called homosexual thing hovering over us.
You are spot on Crystal.  Great thread!

Hmm that's quite an interesting point, I would have thought that men would be less inhibited about being nude. The only reason I say that, is because there seems to be more of an open culture for male nudity and bonding, particularly in the military or in sports teams, where you will frequently see men showering together as a team.

Also it seems like the culture facilitates more female modesty. Like, when my ex and I used to go to the same gym, he commented that the male locker room did not have changing rooms, while in the women's locker room there were separate stalls where women could change clothes in privacy.

Once again, this shows the separation and terrible perception that we often have of the opposite sex.
I would assume women have "changing rooms" due to fem. hygeine needs, or the fact that most of us in western culture assume females have a need for more "comforts" ie: fluffy towels, bubble baths and scented candles.
I am blessed (or cursed) in the fact that I was raised around many women.  My father travelled a lot, and my sister was a cheerleader.  I feel that I have a slightly more realistic idea of women than most, however, still skewed.  It is a sad state of affairs.
I thought my sister how to fight, shoot a gun and skin a deer, I know how to braid hair, sew, cook and am often questioned in my sexuality due to (IMO) my well balanced upbringing.
I am not afraid to hug other men or enjoy a long hot bath, but I'll kick your ass if you talk shit about my mom or sister lol.

IDK if the changing rooms are due to feminine hygiene needs, because feminine hygiene needs are usually done in the toilet, since you can throw away or flush personal items there. I thought maybe that women are thought of as needing more privacy because of fear of sexual assault. Either that, or women or thought of as having more body image issues, so they might not want to be seen by others. At least that's how I interpreted it.

Your comment about the "comforts" just reminded me something though. When I went to a science museum one time, I was snooping around the gift shop, and noticed that they had a bunch of "boy" science projects, and then one "girl" science project. You know what the girl science project was? "Use chemistry to create bubble baths and bath salts and soaps!!!!" It was pretty fucked up.

It is true though, about the comforts what you said. A couple years ago my father (who normally lives in Asia) was visiting and we walked by a nail salon, and he noticed a male in there getting his nails done. My dad started FREAKING OUT saying "OMG there's a GUY in there!!!!!" I was looking at him like, "uh......... yeah?" Guys getting their nails done is somewhat of a normal thing in California. Generation and cultural gap. Where he comes from, women have to be beautiful. Men have to be rich. Or either of the sexes is not worth anything.

You know, what's interesting is that in the history of the Japanese sauna, before the Meiji period, men and women and children all bathed together in the nude. It was seen as a social thing to do, like having a BBQ or going to the movies together. Then the British came and separated the men and women, obviously for religious reasons.

Where did you used to go? I go naked in 24 hour fitness, but am the ONLY guy who does it, everyone else wears shorts; it gives me weird vibes for being in there nude.

Its a friggen sauna!!!

BTW I totally agree. Nudity is beauty.

My new gym is called Lifetime Athletic Club.

I used to go to LA Fitness, which only had a dry sauna in the women's room, and luckily they had no swimsuit rule there, so I went naked there all the time. The cool thing was that all the women were wearing swimsuits besides me, some other women would see that I was naked and so they would start go to naked too! I was helping start a naked movement. :awesome:

The 24 Hr Fitness Super Sport that I used to go to had a steam room and dry sauna that was outside by the pool, not in the locker room. So I couldn't go naked at either of those ones.

Totally.

Since she's such an activist it would make sense to support her cause with some public tits and ass.

yes I have been to saunas before and yes, there have been completely naked
people in saunas, yes, many sitting on a towel, some have taken the towel
out from under their asses and sat on the wood slats, most remained
wrapped in the towel

in my state it's listed under the health departments rules on pools,
probably the same for california, no, there's no rules on nudity but there
are on sanitation, you are the one that's so up in arms about the 'rape
culture' of america and when a company decides to do something that would
fit within your beliefs you decide to bitch about it?

no where did I say the health department regulated nudity, I was pretty
sure I made it clear with my explanation

BTW, around here, if it's called a SPA, we get a hand job, there's no
health department rules on that either but it violates our prostitution
laws, yet another dumb law but it seems a lot of people dont follow rules
such as sitting on a towel

What does this have to do with rape culture? This is not a co-ed sauna. The men and women are in separate rooms and have their own spa's. Honestly, what is even the point of having a separate sex sauna if you cannot even get nude in it?

what was this part about?

Quote:
I think it's a really bad thing. IMO, when you turn nudity into something WAY BIGGER than it really is, you actually end up sexualizing the body. People begin to see it as a tempting, forbidden, sexualized object and it turns something totally natural into something scandalous and perverted. It creates shame where there shouldn't be shame. This issue about nudity runs so true for public breastfeeding as well.

and to answer this, we run around with our dangly bits flopping about,
popping each other's butts with towels and playing slap ass while
congratulating each other on a great workout or a fine physique, watching
any movie such as Porky's :smirk:
