American Culture Through American Music...
    #2349103 - 02/18/04 09:36 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Hey everybody... I am holding a seminar on "American Culture Through American Music" in part of a forum about "The American Dream" at a school in Norway. Anyway, let me give you my idea, and then where I need help from you guys. I figured out that there are many kinds of music that are "American" by genre (the old saying that "the blues could have only come out of america", etc), but due to time, restricted my presentation to only 4 genres: jazz and blues, folk and protest songs, haight-ashbury and psychedelia, and hip-hop. I'm going to talk and discuss with the audience about if these genres could have only come out of america, discuss literature at the time (for instance talk about be-bop by first reading a section of Kerouac's), culture, and american society that led to this music coming about. What I need from you guys are suggestions as to what songs to play for the seminar.

I was thinking-
Jazz and Blues:
Robert Johnson - Ramblin' on my mind
Charles Mingus - Better git it in your soul
Miles Davis - something from "On the Corner" to showcase what jazz merged into.

Folk and Protest:
Woodie Guthrie - The Ballad of Tom Joad
Bob Dylan - I can't decide what song
Country Joe - perhaps "I feel like I'm fixin' to die rag" ?

The Grateful Dead - I can't decide what song... help please! Something live, for sure, but maybe a 20min Dark Star might get a bit annoying to people who have never listened to the Dead? I was thinking perhaps Scarlet Begonias or Estimated Prophet, but let me know your suggestions
Quicksilver Messenger Service - no clue what song to play
What else should I play in this genre? Hendrix... but he was quite "british" in his sound, in a way... unlike the Dead who spawned the "Jam" genre that is positively american...

Grandmaster Flash - the message
2 pac - Hail Mary? (not sure about this one)
Wu-Tang Clan - Da Mystery of Chessboxin? (not sure about this one either)
Blackstar (Mos Def and Talib Kweli) - 1,2,3 (what's the name of that song? "I said a 1 2 3... mos def and talib kweli...)

Anyway, I think you get the drift, so I'll leave you now to think of any songs, artists, genres, etc that could explain some aspect of American culture.

Thanks for any help,

No rock? That's a huge part of American music culture. Bob Dylan is rock but he's best put in the protest category.

But like you said you're restricted by time.

The problem with using rock was basically that the American rock scene and the British rock scene were (nearly, hopefully i don't offend anybody here!) one and the same... if I was to talk about "hair bands" in the 80s, there was nothing distinctly American about that... same with the 70s "arena" rock. so I decided to leave it out, and opted instead for the Dead, since they founded a truly "american" genre from a truly "american" setting. BTW Innvertigo, if you are from Michigan (as your loc says), I dunno where crackerville is, but if its anywhere near south-western michigan (kzoo?) and you like rock, you'd do well to check out a band called Berwer from kzoo. I'm too damn mellow to really dig the rock scene, beyond a few bands that are nostalgic for me, but Berwer puts on a damn good show.
