Never thought of this before...rye grain prep tip......
    #19963112 -

I'm sure some have thought of this but I stumbled upon it by accident. The rye grain I get is fairly clean but there is always a decent element of dust and such that you will always have to rinse out but I think I just made that process a lil easier for myself. Especially at the end of a bag. Anyway I just threw the amount I plan on soaking into a pot and was picking it up to bring inside to start rinsing and I picked it up fast and a big waft of dust flew up and out. So I just proceeded to shake the grain around in the pot and clouds of dust just flew up. Anyhoo I'll be doing this before rinsing from now on. Figured I'd pass it along as I've never been advised to do this and just never thought to.

Eventually I Wana build a table of sorts with a fine mesh screen on top to be able to lay the grain on in a thin layer and just spray it down. Also would be good for drying as I've seen some others do this before but I have to figure a catchment method for when doing this in the fall and winter and such in the basement. But anyway while still using the pot rinsing method this should cut down amount of rinsing quite a bit. Just thought I'd share my silly should be obvious discovery.

thanks. always best to get the dirt off and not just move it around some. Think about a surface with dust.. always better to sweep off dust before wetting the surface to clean it. I never applied that to grain prep.

If you're gonna shake your grain like that, make sure to wear a mask. That shit can build up over time and fuck you up.

What I do is scoop out my grain into my pot, and during my rinse stage, when the grain is in the colander I'll use my sprayer to force all the dirty water off of it.

I've yet to find a colander that has small enough mesh not allow the grains to slip through prior to hydrating. I look all over. I've found some before with a finer mesh but super small. In the winter even with large colander when doing a batch for 14 jars I've gotta use like 6 colanders. I just don't have the room. I'm fixing to alter a paint bucket with Window screen mesh on the bottom with the bottom cut out one of these days

Try something like that. They're sold anywhere a normal colander would be. I've been using them for years.

That's pretty much exactly what I use with grains.  For drying though I've started using my heat gun to speed up the process.  Blowing 400-500 degree air at them while stirring does the fuckin trick.

I just dump mine onto a towel with a fan on it for a while. I can do like 50 jars in an hour that way.
