I've read that spores should be incubated at 88 for a couple days for them to germinate quickly. also 86 is the best temp for cubensis mycelium growth.
I use rye all the time with no probs. the shaking really ups colonization time. You've got some growth now so it won't be long

hmm. i think 1:1 grain:H2O is pretty wet from my limited experience, but then again you did not soak or steep so i cannot say. 79-80 is ideal. 86 is optimum growth temp but your jars and your mycellium are warmer than the surrounding air temp; they create their own amount of heat. if its been 16 days you should have some good visible myc. youre probably just too wet in the jars from the sounds of it but again i cannot say for final.

same thing with me.. its my first time using rye/wheat straw... temp. of jars was only around 74-78 which is probably why it took so long for me...it took a lot longer than verm/brf jars... also it looks totally different. its not really a fluffy white mass of mycelium so much as goopy smelly white stuff around a big clump of rye. is this what its supposed to be like? also its a dirty sort of white, and smells (this is from memory) like moldy peanuts or something. not like nasty contamination smell but different than PF style jars.

5-8cc??? you only need about 2-2.5 per jar. You may have too high of water content after that. Also if you put a 1:1 grain to water ratio, then that's even more water.
