what is sterilized rye grain supposed to look like

i have some pint jars of rye grain + 1/2 cup water that i just sterilized and innoculated with mycelium, but the rye is sticking to the sides of the jar and is kind of clumpy. i can break it up when i shake it but i can't get it off the sides of the jars. will it still work? if not what did i do wrong? should i open the jars and scrape the rye off the sides of the jars with a sterilized scalpel or just leave it? also, there's no goo or pooled water or anything like that, just condensation on the jar and some clumpy-ass grain. thanks for any help.. sorry if this is a stupid question. i guess i should probably just wait a couple days and see what happens.Edited by Amoeba665 on 09/07/01 01:33 AM.

Seems a like a bit too much water. Use a little lesst the next time. It?s about trial and error.

I had the same question. I did my first rye up this past week. First I cooked it too much.. it looked like fluffy rice. Then I was much more attentive and made sure it didn't cook and hopefully just absorb enough water. BUT.. after sterilization.. the grain was dry.. and I could shake it like it was dry seed. I added some sterile water to the jar this am, in hope that the grain might soak it up. We'll see. Does someone have a close up PIC of rye berries at perfection? --MIcron Majick guys? You out there? so much for "grain for retards". I could use some help with this as well. thanks for posting your question.

Thank you Una. Boy, mine don't look that at all. They are a lighter color, very similar to uncooked white rice. What tek do you use? I brought 7cups of rye covered atleast one inch of water above them to a boil and then put on simmer for 45min. I had to keep adding water so they wouldn't cook. I had the gas burner as low as I could get it. They were rinsed with tap water after. I notice in the picture the grain isn't really "popped open". It looks like it was baked or toasted and certainly no gummy or clumpy stuff. I'll be looking up more rye teks . I hope you return to this thread with alittle more help. Thanks for posting that picture.

alright mine is probably overcooked also... i filled the jar with water to a point a little above the rye, and pressure cooked about an hour... i was supposed to only PC for 45 mins, but i got my cooker from a thrift store and there's no pressure gauge so i figured i'd add a little time to make sure i didn't undercook it. well i scraped the stuff off the sides, i'm going to wait a few days and see what happens.

Nushroom.. my grain is barely cooked. Not popped open at all. My first round I did that. My second not enough. As a matter of fact the 7 cups uncooked made 8 1/2 half au dente, shall we say. When I started measuring it out.. I realized ah nooo and put it back it to cook a bit more.Still didn't get close to the 14cups per 'grains for retards tek" Una's pic the grains are bigger, browner, crispier looking. My shit looks like long grain rice uncooked. I'll try again and PUTZ around- the ol trial and error. ( damn I hope these are rye berries, it said on the bin, looks wider and longer than brown rice, now wouldn't that be a real newbie joke if it was some kinda rice) BTW, nothing has germinated yet, day 5. I'll get it.. eventually. Thanks for popping in here Nushrom.. and thanks amoeba for giving me some space.

It is rye.. and it's colonizing this morning.(eqs and gulf coast) Doesn't look like Una's pic..but apparently the mycelium like it just hope the moisture holds up. .. btw.. my QUINOA,FINCH,BRF,VERMIC COMBO is yummy stuff. They are going for it-voraciously.

Amoeba..been away. just came back to this post. I undercooked mine.But- after I inoculated.. I went back and added about 10ccs of sterile water to the quart jar. It was risky opening up the jar again.. but I had hepa running, filter disks too. They are colonizing. I am surprized.

Here`s a trick i read about.... sterilize for 7 minutes at 15 pounds let PC cool shake well.. then back in the PC for 45 minutes have`nt tried yet but I bet it distibutes the water better in the grain and seems like shaking it soon like that and then sterilizing for the longer period would help with clumping I`m sure gonna try next time because I`ve had the same problem with a jar full of mush trying to shake that shit lol..let me know how it worked for you If i don`t beat you to it
?But I don?t want to go among mad people,? Alice remarked. ?Oh, you can?t help that,? said the Cat: I`m mad,Your mad.we`re ALL MAD!!!! hahahahaha"

one of my problems that I've had right along, even before the grain is I use a med grade sterilizer.. at 250 degrees, the pressure is about 120psi. So doing jars for 30min.. still letting pressure come down on its own, nothing sudden, it zaps the moisture. My cakes all colonize.. but at birth they are real thirsty. Now I inject water /not dunk, to remedy that. Now I gotta get the grain thing down.
