Quick Cultivation Question

Just a quick question for any of you out there with the knowledge to help. I'm using the Poor Man's Terrarium setup (due to lack of space rather than funds), outlined in MMGG. In order to raise humidity in the "terrarium," a wet paper towel is supposed to be put on the bottom of the two-liter bottle.
My question is: Is it a problem to place the cakes directly on the wet paper towel, or should I use something to prop them up away from any direct moisture?

Maybe some wire mesh bent down around the edges. It seems like the paper towel could get kind of messy.

Thanks. I thought of using that technique because all the other terrariums used it, but I didn't know if a damp paper towel would differ from the effects straight water causes.
