quick humidification question

well, I'm not new to this, but I AM new to doing a grow with a humidifier....

What do you guys recommend?  Ultrasonic or cool mist?  Also, how do I gauge the right amount of humidity.  I have an inexpensive hygrometer which just reads 'HIGH" for humidities in excess of 85%. 

How long of a tube should I use between the humidifier and the terrarium?  Is it better to remove more humidity and leave the humidifer run 24/7 or should I invest in a timer.  If so, any suggestions on on/off cycles?

Any help is greatly appreciated....  I just want to get this shit right without too much trial and error....  :grin:

Cool mist and ultrasonic are the same thing. I have used them before and they work pretty goog. Too good in fact. Put one on a timer if you can't turn it down low enough. Use whatever length hose you want. Try hooking it up to one then another five gallon bucket and then into your chamber. If there is a ton of water collecting on the sides adjust your timer accordingly.

Cool Mist and Ultra Sonic are NOT the same things, although they both do the job equally well. The advantage you get with a coolmist is that it blows fresh air into your terrarium. I personally am having a hard time getting the right on/off cycle to keep my casings at only 90% and not the full 100%.

Woah, ok slow down. Here's the deal. An ultrasonic if left on 24/7 will be mass overkill. Mine is on a timer that runs it for 12mins then off for 1 hour and repeats. Depending on where you live you may find that a cool mist, exspecially if it is the evaporative type, won't keep your humidity high enough. I use both. In my case the cool mist basically just serves as air exchange while my ultrasonic serves to provide the right level of humidity. Here's a link to my setup that might help answer some of your questions.

As beetle says, for RH ultrosonic is the best and coolmist better for airexchange.

Where I'm at, cool mist is all I need. In fact, its almost too much humidity. I have an ultrasonic which I used to use under a whole variety of conditions (computer fans 'n all sorts of shit) but get the coolmist first THEN the ultrasonic. Its seriously a better buy for your money. If anything, It'll be sufficient ENOUGH and if you find you need to improve get yourself an ultrasonic. Coolmist is underkill, ultrasonic is overkill. You can always suppliment humidity (misting, ultrasonic, bubbler, casings, perlite, etc.) but never air exchange (fanning 4 times a day? F that!)
