Re: Polyfil ironed out to create 'filter discs' :) [Re: Dilated]

So, so far I made 32 lids and I have enough silicone to make roughly 8 more.  I still have enough from that first mat to make about 100 more quarter sized filters.  The ones in the tub got PC'd earlier.  I'll be knocking half of them up with B+ and the other half with PF classic in the AM.  :girlishjoy:

How do you know if you have permeability still?  There's a good chance the iron sealed the polyfill.

That's a great question and I tested this myself.  I'm assuming you're meaning, Permeation of a gas or vapor through a solid substance. The first lid I made I breathed through it and put my hand on the other side and I could feel the warmth of my breath.  I know that ISN'T the most scientific way of doing something but it was just a quick test before I made the other 31 lids.  I'll be knocking these up today with the best sterile technique's that I've learned from guys like you RR.  If it's an epic failure then I will move to have this tek strikin' from the record. :gethigh:

I had just found out about EZ-Felt when reading through TL's tek.  I looked for it to no avail.  So I thought I'd give this a try.  Essentially making my own EZ-Felt.  Where do you find EZ-Felt?

They have it at the same craft store where I get my poly. I cant remember what its called. This method seems to work so if you cant get SFDs or EZ-Felt I could see using it.

I successfully G2G with these as my filter and had no problems.  They colonized fully and smelled just like fresh mushies. :dancer:

I have used these multiple times now and still have had zero contams.  I will continue to use them until further notice.  I'm thinking of using them for my monotubs soon.  I'll be sure to keep this updated.

Which filters do you use?

I tend to use tyvek unless I'm doing a liquid culture in which case I use synthetic filter disks.

Pretty decent, so far as I can tell when I do fail it is due to screw ups in sterile procedure. Never had a contam in LC and i used to use tyvek there too.

Well so far I only had one contam ever and that was 10 years ago when I was a kid.  I had a cake turn green,  but since I got back to it I have had no failures yet, the shroomery has evolved so much.. I wish I had the information I have now that I didn't then.  I do have 1 jar I'm worried about, after I did a G2G I started to shake a jar up outside of the SAB and it went all over the floor bc I hadn't screwed it on tightly yet  well most of the donor grain went all over the floor and the jar was exposed to open air.  It is colonizing pretty well though so I may have just gotten away with this one
