Polyfil ironed out to create 'SFDs' * 1
    #19938845 -

So I been taking, taking, and taking from this wonderful site of ours and I think I found a way to finally give back with some useful information.

I been trying to find SFD's around here without much luck so I heard through the grapevine on here (via TranscendingLife's Jars) that ez-felt is a good alternative to SFD's.  (also I should state that I don't trust tyvek as most other cultivators don't either)  Well basically ez-felt is just polyfil ironed down into a "filter disc".  So I found some 1/2" thick polyfil roll @ Walmart and decided I would iron 4, 1/2" sheets together and it worked great!  I created a "polyfil mat".  All the supplies used for my jar's have been found at Wal-mart.

Supplies:
- (1) WIDE Mouth plastic Jar Lids "Mainstays Wide Mouth Canning Jar Lids"
- (1) Drill
- (1) ¼” (Inoculation Hole) & 3/8” for GE (Gas Exchange)
- (1)  General Electric Clear Premium Waterproof Silicone Kitchen/Bath/Plumbing adhere's to plastic as read on the back of the tube.  Also TL advises that your silicone be at least 350 degree F tested.  This is 400 F tested.
- (1) High Loft Quilter's Polyester Batting (1/2" thick polyfil sheet)
- (1) Pair of Scissors
- (1) Disposable Glove
- (1) Sharpie
- (1) Iron

First I cracked a beer as advised by TL.

Start by using 2 sheet's of the polyfil and ironing them together.

I set my iron to "75%" strength (no misting or water, keep iron dry!) Do not use max heat on the iron as it will melt the polyfil.  The 2 sheets will blend together and make 1 thin mat.  Do this twice and create 2 mats and iron them together.  Cut it out into a manageable sheet.  Iron again until very flat.  Ironing takes the most time but if you have the patience you will have unlimited SFD's for a very fair price.

That's all there is to it, after that just follow TL's lid making tek and substitute these filters.

So, so far I made 32 lids and I have enough silicone to make roughly 8 more.  I still have enough from that first mat to make about 100 more quarter sized filters.

I do recommend using the SFD's that TL uses but if you do not have those at your disposal these should work very well for you as well.

*Update* - I've gone many generations using this tek and had great success.

They are used to cover our GE (Gas Exchange) holes on our spawn jars.  Keep contams out of jars

ah I dig;

with the method posted above, I bet you could sandwich both pieces of poly-fil on either side of a mason jar lid (the metal kind) with a hole in it and iron it down all need and shit...hmm...

TL's Quote from his lid tek

"Pros of SFDs:
1. You never have to replace the filter; the lid will wear out before it.  Therefore, when your lid is done, you just cut the RTV w/ a razor/knife under it & reapply it to a new prepped lid.
2. You DON'T have to put foil over your lids when PCing. This saves time, money & effort.
3. If you prep your SFDs like I do in this tek, you get 5-6 Filters per 1.  Therefore, per lid it's about 15-20 cents. Not that expensive at all. When I first started in mycology I purchased 48 100mm SFDs. I still have 12 sitting around, yet to be cut.
Cons of Polyfil or Tyvek:
1. You have to replace it almost every time.
2. You have to use Foil over your lids when PCing.
3. They're not good as filters."

Well I've essentially turned polyfil into SFD's.  Instead of stuffing the polyfil into the GE, I've ironed it down so that it can be a manageable cover of the GE hole

thats clever.  i wonder if u could mod the tek to create a perfect polyfill layer for the bottom holes of a mono, not to thin, not to thick, to secure to the outside instead of stuffing it.

if u will it, it is no dream

I've wondered the same thing BL. Now that I've switched to the morning glory brand for my bottom holes it's not so bad. But I really like the idea of the clean look. I have this material that we use in the flooring industry that I would love to send a sample out to some people to check out to see if it could be beneficial to this hobby as well. Any takers pm me

I'm not sure ironing would have a significant impact in increasing fiber density for microscopic filtration. I like your idea though, it's inspiring. Do you think the fabric now feels denser? Or does anyone know how to measure the fiber density of a fabric?

They already sell polyfil in the form of a mat/sheet. It's not a good substitute for a real SFD.

Well you know how we stuff the bottom holes very tightly on our mono's, maybe if I ironed more layers.. it would essentially be the same thing?  I was thinking the same thing yesterday though.

Well that's why I double plied the two layers.  The fabric feels much denser.  I'm sure a third layer wouldn't hurt.  And to your last question, that's a good question and I'd like to know the answer to that as well.

Well then tell me what is a good substitute?  I couldn't find any so I experimented with this.  As I stated at the bottom of my tek, I recommend using a real SFD.  TL stated that easy-felt WAS a good substitute.  This is essentially the same thing.  Science can not advance with out experimentation

u would have to play around with it. i do think its possible to stuff bottom holes to tight.  I'm always looking for 1/4"-1/2" evap ring around my bottom holes these days.  others have no evap ring and do fine tho, so its all about dialing in the particular tub to its environment (fan, window, temp, etc).  so i wouldn't make it as strong as the one u used for a filter, because an SFD on the bottom of a mono sounds too restrictive, id make it less thick.
