Ps. zapotecorum from Huatla de Jimenez (CNZ)
    #19701484 -

This is a new strain of Ps. zapotecorum collected by a friend of mine who was staying in Huatla de Jimenez over several months. It was collected on the slope of Cerro Adoracion within 200 yards of Maria Sabina's old home by a friend of mine (azure) in the summer of 2010. Hence, we are dubbing this strain: Chicon Nindo Zapotecorum (CNZ)

This specific strain was started on agar, liquified in a 250ml Eberbach, and transferred to a modified pftek substrate using 2:1 vermiculte:BRF/Millet flour + 5% sand.  After 1 month the cultures were fully colonized and cased with standard pasteurized casing of 10:1:1 peat:caco2:gypsum + 5% sand.  After 1 month, the cultures began to set pins and start fruiting.  It takes 6-8 weeks for the carpophores of zapotecorum to fully mature.

To assure proper humidity and temperature control, I have developed the following method:

Using a BioBubble setup that I created, starting with a Premium BioBubble from:

http://www.biobubblepets.com/premium/

I use the Imagine Gold Tropic Aire Reptile Humidifier and Air Exchange:

http://everythingmushrooms.com/cultivation-tools/temperature-and-humidity-devices-and-controllers/tropicaire-humidifier-and-air-exchanger-with-air-pump/

The humidity tube is slid through the grate fixture on the side of the BioBubble riser, which has been covered with saran wrap to keep in humidity and potential insect invaders out.

Added a humidity and temperature control:

the Zoo Med reptile fogger:
http://zoomed.com/db/products/EntryDetail.php?EntryID=252&DatabaseID=2&SearchID=5

And the Hydrofarm Seeding Heat Mat as heat source:
http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MT10006-19-1-2-Inch-Seedling/dp/B0001WV010

There is enough vermiculte in the bottom of the incubation chamber, and plastic underneath, to prevent heat from rising directly onto the bottom of the cultures and warming them excessively.

As a light source, since I have found 450-470nm blue light keeps the stems solid and the broadens the caps, comparable to specimens collected in the field, I am using this specific lamp:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CXTZN2Q/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This setup effectively keeps the BioBubble at 95% RH and 73F perfectly.

The gauge on the left displays sensor readings:

Let's take a peek at the early results:

Beautiful pins man, quite an interesting fruiting chamber. I wonder what P.Mexicana would look like grown in that environment.

This first flush developed fatso stems.  Any observations on potential causes?

Anyone with experience taking prints from zapotecorum have any advice on when to start the printing process?  These are slow in every respect: 1 month to colonize the substrate, 1 month to set pins, 1 month to form mature carpophores:

Those look like pretty light gills eh?

I just had a sterile indoor ovoid flush that was very disapointing.

I am printing some P psuedoaztecorums ATM . They are like the zapos in that they took over a month to colonize the sub, then the casing took a long time too. So I understand the marathon projects! The whole process took forever!
But you could clearly see sporulation and they are producing decent prints from some of them. So if  you cant see spores by now, you may be shit out of luck. Maybe and hopefully your second flush will be different .

Just had to wait for the caps to darken.  Placing the caps on glass slides in Petri dishes, and keeping them moist using droplets placed on the tops with a small syringe and 27 gauge needle, they are dropping spores beautifully.  I also found that what is going on with this strain is that it needs a lot more water.  It was found growing on moss covered very damp soil.  Apparently it thrives on having lots of moisture.

A close up of some of the more mature carpophores:

The prints have come out dark, by leaving the caps on slides for approximately 4 days, moistening them each morning and evening.

Wherever the mushrooms are cut they turn dark blue/black.

So, we are dubbing this strain Chicon Nindo zapotecorum (CNZ).  I have learned a lot already from this first grow.

Thanks for the cool share, and some nice pics mate. I always love to read about 'exotic' species, especially when someone tries (even more when they end up succeeding, as here) to grow some of them. And another point I enjoy is the possible expansion of the number of species/strains/varieties/etc. that are known and even better, grown.

Long time Shroomery reader, nice to finally join in on the fun.
Sorry for the occasional, rambling, long posts...
