Do you believe you have a 'soul'?
    #19504736 -

Do you think who you are and your personally is something that can't be explained by neuroscience? I am by no means an expert but from what my experiences tell me so far, the 'soul' is purely an illusion. I view the brain as a hard drive, tailored by your experiences and will lose all the information it holds when it becomes defective (death, brain damage). I don't see any deeper meaning or anything spiritual. Humans are as disposable as a hard drive. My acid experiences and various drug experiences haven't changed this.

This devalues everything for me and life is pretty much meaningless, though this outlook is probably due to a lack of something in my brain like serotonin, that's what my psychologist says anyway.
So anyway, do you believe in the illusion of a soul?

OK, I'm just gonna spout some shit about some shit, so don't mind me. hehe.

I believe that we have souls, and I don't believe our souls are ego driven. It's a personal thought I've gathered from past experiences. I believe we are capable of living several or limitless lives as this "soul". I know I'm going out on a limb here but for anyone who believes in ghosts, what else could describe such a thing? Lemme tell you a story real quick. . .

When I was a child i was woken up to a noise in my parents room, and when I walked into their room there was a man standing next to their bed that looked like my dad, so I thought it was him, so I walked over to him and realized it wasent my dad and i freaked the fuck out, then all the sudden my dad woke up and grabbed me and yelled at me for scaring him, and the man i saw dissapeared. So my dad took me back to bed and i forgot about everything that happened, I wrote it off as a bad dream. So the next day my parents come through the front door crying, and they tell me that their best friend had passed away the night before from cancer. They showed me his picture and sure enough he was the man I saw standing next to their bed.

In any case, my dad passed away several years now, and i feel him with me on often, could it be my imagination? Sure, but so can anything. He always shows up in my dreams, its actually quite comical. Did my dad have a soul, I believe so.

In Buddhism we are blessed in the fact that we are capable of becoming greater in this form we were given. However animals are not so lucky, animal's souls are supposedly different then ours as they are not able to advance. I'm not so sure about all that personally, as Ive met cats and dogs of whom ive had more respect for and had more personality then some of the people ive met.

blah blah blah, anyway

I believe we have souls, I feel my ancestors within me, how come when i trip, i trip about jungles and temples and shit, Ive never been to a jungle temple in my life, lol.

Anyway, just a thought

Interesting experience. I wish I had something like that to convince me people have souls and have something greater than the physical world but I just can't. And I doubt tripping has any value haha, just chemicals in the brain really, it can all be explained.

We are beyond explanation.  Words have so many different meanings and are never the actual thing.

I donno, tripping can be very valuable though. I was changed forever the first time I took LSD. The first time I took LSD was the first time I found the notion of a god as well. Without "him" I would not be alive today, and I'm not saying hes a living being or a man, he is the energy of which we have come, the energy that unites us with the universe. I am alive today because I begged this god for my life, and without that action my body would have failed me. A pretty heavy notion to say the least.

This is pretty much my way of thinking as well. As I've done a lot of research into buddhism too, and very much respect their views and the approach they used to get them. Sorry to hear about your dad buest. Mine just passed away last year. It's hard man.

It is hard indeed, im sorry to hear that, it brings me peace to know that he will forever be in my heart. I didnt get a chance to grieve because i left for the army a week after he passed away. It was years later that I got out of the army, and I cried my ass off for my dad. He was a good man who was loved by all. As I'm sure your dad was as well.

Existing before Heaven and Earth,
Silent, still, standing alone, unchanging,
All-pervading, unfailing,
I do not know its name; I call it tao.
If forced to give it a name, I call it
Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

We are organic analogs of a computer. We have volatile neural circuits that lose their structure and functionality if they are deprived of oxygen for more than a few minutes. Everything we would call consciousness, the mind, the soul are merely properties of these physical structures. Just like the ram in your computer, when we are powered down, everything is lost.

yup, support both soul and reincarnation/past/future lives, no death etc.

who we are inside never changes, even past lifetimes it seems often
some of the essence is still there it seems, that didn't evolve in this lifetime

but that is just my belief

The concept of reincarnation, beyond being mathematically absurd, is quite possibly the belief with the least amount of evidence I can think of.
