Literally every grad student I know is getting paid to go. I literally don't know any grad students not getting paid. Like 95% of the grad schools I was looking at award every student (at least in my field, math) 15-20k stipend.

This is the case for students seeking a PhD in the basic sciences.  The stipend is IN ADDITION to free tuition.

This is because in addition to taking 5-6 years, you do a 3-5 year post doc afterwards in order to enter a job market where hundreds of applicants are seeking a job that starts around 70-80k.

It is also true of masters students in STEM disciplines as well IME.

Starting at 70-80k after 15 years of school though?  Ouch.  That is the starting salary for bachelor's computer science graduates.

My g/f's father teaches there, I hear it's a good school, with good people. My advice on school is it is a great place to learn, although you can learn pretty much anything on the internet/youtube. School is good if you are going there to learn or the field you want to get in to requires a degree. However if you are an artist or want to start a business, I think the best way to learn is to dive in to it, get a job where you can move up, and just learn as much as you can. School can be very expensive and a lot of degrees are a waste of time.

Although having a degree looks great on paper, and is very well respected, your resume and the work you have done is always going to mean more.

This is coming from an artist perspective, I dropped out of college, and am making money doing all the things that I love to do. It can be a struggle. However learning to survive the struggle has only made my resume that much better. I live in New York City, and feel if I ever wanted to work for someone else I could walk in to any large business or corp and come out with a very decent job doing something creative/artistic, not only that but I feel that my resume would be more attractive then a lot of artist who got there degree in school.

Then again if you want to be a doctor or something a degree is definitely needed and respected.

Also find something you love to do, and actually enjoy, meeting smart people with money and making connections is also pretty important.

oppressive student debt is a tool to de-radicalize the revolutionary forces that arise from the combination of being educated (you understand how fucked up the world is) and young (you aren't yet invested in the fucked up system to want to ignore its failings)

nowadays, students in north america are about as complacent of a population as you can find--drink yourself to oblivion on the weekend--uppers to trudge through the week of libraries--rinse and repeat--occupy was the best this group could come up with, #protest

look outside of north america though--places where education is heavily subsidized, if not free--and you will see what they fear

Dude I can totally vouch for people at my college being complacent as fuck. Its kinda sad that all anyone does to ease the pain is take drugs (generally speaking) including myself :foreveralone:
