Got accepted into Rutgers New Brunswick
    #19417254 -

Just found out this morning. I can say I am overjoyed. Anyone have anything to say about the school, either from experience or observation? I really want to go and am overjoyed that I got accepted, but I am out of state and not sure if its worth the 40k (before financial aid).

I also applied to UNC Chapel Hill, Temple, University of Pittsburgh.

Not really a city guy... thats why Rutgers is nice. Its suburban but New Brunswick is also right there for the days I feel the city.

I really want to go to Rutgers haha

Any advice for a kid getting ready to shape his life?

I had a few friends go to Rutgers in New Bruns... They all had positive experiences. Some of the Rutgers parties were CRAZY too! Ive been to quite a few in my time. Just dont let that or the women get in the way of your academics!

PS- Lots of crazy bitches at those parties and bars in Bruns too!!! For better or worse!

The only thing... $27K tuition, and projected annual cost is $45 grand... it scares me how much I would have to go in debt...

the only thing thats keeping me from accepting right now is that price tag

Gangs have started kidnapping American students in new brunswick, Part of the Quebec militant separatist groups. Normally the english  authorities in new brunswick just file them as missing persons. English authorities dont do much as the groups are based out of quebec. it get some minor attention in french canadian local news , but who watches that right?

nobody knows why, it has only been a few years since it has started happening, but the rate of disappearances is increasing.

New Brunswick is an interesting place, a lot of my friends went to Rutgers and they all seemed to like it a lot.  Lots of sluts, easy to get to NYC, tons of good food places nearby.  Also its easy getting around with the campus buses.  A few cool music venues on top, though NYC is so close its usually a better option.

I met two really cool and down to earth Burlesque chicks at a bar in New Brunswick. They were the very last girls in the place youd think were into burlesque! One chick was a nerd and does zelda cosplay, goes to comic conventions and plays Skyrim!! We ended up chilling and sneaking into their FEMALE only dorm!! Twas a fun night hanging out with them

Ugh I hope I get some kind of financial aid... How the fuck is anyone suppose to pay for this crap. Even in state schools still equate to 35k or more...

And undergraduate degrees are having less and less meaning... It's all about the graduate degrees now. So possibly tack on an extra 120k of debt....

I hate what this world has done to education

A bachelor's degree is worth plenty for STEM majors.  Pick the right major and your education will be a good investment.  If the price tag is really bothering you, do some time at a community college.  Community college is a great way to cut down the cost of school.  The price tag for Rutgers is insane.  You can go to a school like Rowan or Montclair State for $12k a year tuition.

oppressive student debt is a tool to de-radicalize the revolutionary forces that arise from the combination of being educated (you understand how fucked up the world is) and young (you aren't yet invested in the fucked up system to want to ignore its failings)

nowadays, students in north america are about as complacent of a population as you can find--drink yourself to oblivion on the weekend--uppers to trudge through the week of libraries--rinse and repeat--occupy was the best this group could come up with, #protest

look outside of north america though--places where education is heavily subsidized, if not free--and you will see what they fear

-Don't go to a 4 year straight out of high school. Go to a CC. You don't need to spend thousands on freshman English.

-Unless you're rich, you NEVER pay the full price. There is a shitton of financial aid. I know a lot of people who have their tuition taken care of 100%, and get a few thousand dollars for living each quarter. I come from a fairly well off family. I received 10k of aid in two years and the school I go to is much cheaper than Rutger's.

-You don't have any idea how grad school works. If you're paying to go to grad school, you're doing something wrong. In grad school, THEY pay YOU to go. Not a lot, but decently. Most places with pay YOU 15,000-20,000 a year. Grad school is a job, not like undergrad. I'm surprised people don't know this. (Note: PROFESSIONAL school is different than grad school. That shit is expensive)

Long story short, you're freaking out over nothing. If you are smart, university is totally affordable.

I've only met 1 person that had his grad school paid for, and he isn't getting paid for it.  Its hard enough to find a job, its even harder finding a job that's going to pay you to go back to school.

I spent two years at a JC, then 2 years at a state university.
My JC cost a total of like 2k, lol. JCs are super cheap. My university is 13k.

So overall 28k. But I got 10k of money free. Just from FAFSA. So 18k for a college degree. My parents had that basically saved up. I had to take a little bit of loans, but that was basically for living.

If you put yourself in a lot of debt, you fucked up somewhere. I don't get how people end up in 100k+ debt. It's almost like you have to try to do that.

The SCHOOL pays you.

Literally every grad student I know is getting paid to go. I literally don't know any grad students not getting paid. Like 95% of the grad schools I was looking at award every student (at least in my field, math) 15-20k stipend.

I'm told that you can get in-state tuition in the first year if you sign a year long lease.

Every single STEM grad student I know is or was paid (around 20 people).  Their pay basically just covers tuition and living expenses but they are still making money not losing it.

If you go for a liberal arts grad you probably still aren't going to have good job prospects anyways so I would never recommend
that.

OP what are you going for?  I would not pay $40k/year for a BA in history or something along those lines but for engineering or computer science it's definitely worth it.

I want to do something  environmental. First range would be sick. I'm not the type of person who would fair well in the business world. I would be unhappy. I want a job I enjoy and an isobars about. I know realistically though I may end up in the business works anyway. Rutgers has a strong  environmental program, bit again the price is pretty steep. Temple is always another option
They have the pro ranger program so I would be guaranteed a job in the first service after graduation. I just don't like the city. That's not me. I'm an outdoorsman and nature always keeps the depression at bay.

Temple is 17k tuition and only 30k total...

This is the case for students seeking a PhD in the basic sciences.  The stipend is IN ADDITION to free tuition.

This is because in addition to taking 5-6 years, you do a 3-5 year post doc afterwards in order to enter a job market where hundreds of applicants are seeking a job that starts around 70-80k.
